This is a Learn Together Meet for Sunday 29th August at 10am

http://www.ephotobay.com/image/b.jpg (http://www.ephotobay.com/share/b.html)

Starting out meeting at Yellow Duck Marine Co. (http://www.theyellowduckmarine.co.uk/routeMap.php) and then going on a ride on the The Yellow Duck Marine which is a converted WWII DUKW amphibious landing craft which is now a unique 24/30 seat sightseeing tour vehicle. The hour long tour of Liverpool's famous waterfront, city and dockland area is accompanied by a live fun commentary from your Tour Guide and your Captain. Main Site Link (http://www.theyellowduckmarine.co.uk/theYellowBoatCruise.php). Then a ride on The Echo Wheel of Liverpool (http://www.albertdock.com/pages/index.php?page_id=1798) so we can get some high altitude photo's of Liverpool's waterfront. If we have time and energy continue moving ever on to Radio City (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&q=liverpool%20echo%20big%20eye&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl)

We should have some great opportunities for some Landscape, Cityscape, Street, and Architecture photography. I should be able to arrange some discounts when I know roughly how many people are interested.

Meeting up afterwards in a cafe or *cough* bar to show off our photo's and chat about the experiences of the day before heading out for a evening shot of the Famous Liverpool waterfront and the Three Graces.

* * * Start at Albert Docks at 10am * * *

Further details to follow.

Redsnapper (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=249830) has once again offered to donate a prize and is now our official sponsor. Thanks to Joe for his continued support

As usual I'm looking for some experts to help out and have some spanking new kit kindly loaned for us to try out on the day. Including the excellent Expoaperture2 (http://www.flaghead.co.uk/pages/expodisk-products-depth.html) depth of Field Guide disks. and some Formatt (http://www.formatt.co.uk/default.aspx) filter Grads and ND Grads to try out for some long exposures.

I'm hoping to get some donations of prizes for on the day so watch this space. Please post your interest in thread.

Some photo's to inspire you linky (http://www.flickr.com/search/groups/?q=liverpool%20docks&w=595503%40N24&m=pool)

Bought a set of Cokin ND grads, would like a little lerning but do i need to bring a tripod or could i get away with a monopod and is it worth bringing some infared film, not much green stuff in that part of the woods, was born 11/2 miles away so know the area.Just for intrest there is the Palm House in Sefton Park,it was renovated a few years back, great in monochrome, even better in IR .If you are driving south its on the way out of Liverpool but shuts early to the public as it is hired out for weddings and such
Some good derilict buildings around Albert Dock, good for urban decay but go in a group same as any iner city
Some nice old bars in Wood street and a brill chinise buffet ,only £7 up to 6pm for as much as you can eat in Hanover Street but is £10 after 6.The ale is the same price as most pubs in the city, very clean and nice staff
Liverpool 1 the shopping area is to be honest a little boring for photographs ,great if you have the guts for some street photography but a glass of red is a fiver if you fancy a tipple
By the Pier head try and get shots without the new building in,makes it timeless, could bore you with info about the Liver building though LOL, the first sky-scraper in europe thouh, want to know more

I'm just up the road so could well turn up, but won't know until the day before. Will be nice to get some daylight shots of there, rather than the night time ones that I usually take.

Liverpool One is not much use for photos, and it's private property so there is always the chance that security will move you on - has happened before. But.. just on the edge of the complex there is a viewing hole in the pavement where you can look down onto the remains on the very first dock ever to be built in Liverpool. It was discovered when they were putting the footings in for the complex. Nice to see, but anyone who gets a decent shot of it deserves a special prize.

When, when, when the new Liverpool Museum opens - the big black building near the Pier Head, it's reckoned that you'll be able to walk all the way round there.

I'm planning a midweek visit to both cathedrals. Weekends are too busy with services, so if anyone else fancies a religious experience just shout.

Having been sitting here after my single slice of toast for breakfast I thought it would be nice to have a stop off at the all you can eat buffet mentioned earlier in thread. We could maybe do all our daytime togging then have a little break and some food there. Anyone not wanting to hang on for some later cityscapes could slip away at this point.

Any thoughts?

Could be fun round there after recent goings on.

CGeezer
08-08-2010, 12:19
Well I hope the Echo Arena will be on our itinerary if only to get shots of the other docks in the area. I have sent a message asking for permission to the Arena Management and I will let you know the response. :naughty:

CGeezer
08-08-2010, 15:19
Just to clarify We will not be visiting the Echo Arena unless we get

1) an invitation from the Management of the Echo Arena.

2) Photographers in attendance would like to visit and vote as such. This is not a meet to promote rights for Photographers it is just a friendly photo shoot around the Liverpool docks area.

Could you put me down as an attendee with an additional plus 1 please?

Here's hoping that the weather is better than Kirkby Lonsdale and Ingleton :)

Now that I think about it, I've never actually been to Liverpool before. The closest I've been was Crosby beach to take some photos of Anthony Gormley's "Another Place"

We went looking for "Another Place" after a visit to Liverpool about two years ago but gave up after not being able to find a way through from the car park. Tracey would have found us the way :exit:

cowasaki
09-08-2010, 08:00
We had two hours on the car park (someone was leaving and gave me their ticket :)). That was nowhere near enough time for Albert docks on its own and probably have spent about 3-4 hours there. There is quite a lot of old dock equipment etc that might be of interest if you head towards Princes dock from Albert dock then there is the Liverpool eye! etc.

Just had a reply from Echo Arena about taking pics down there:-

ACC Liverpool welcomes members of the public taking photographs of the building and surrounding areas and are pleased that so many already enjoy doing so on a daily basis.

It is not the policy of ACC Liverpool to stop the general public from taking photographs on our site.

That said, we have been advised by the relevant authorities that given the sensitive nature of a number of the events held at ACC Liverpool, vigilance with regards to activity and interest in and around the building should be at the highest level.
We will therefore always need to reserve the right to challenge visitors to the site to ascertain the nature of any activity, in order to protect the safety of the general public and visitors to our venues. As a result, members of the public on ACC Liverpool land may be approached by our security staff.

We trust that this will allow members of the public to continue to enjoy their visits to ACC Liverpool, and in particular for amateur photographers to enjoy our unique building and surroundings unimpeded.
I would be pleased if you could confirm when you will come down to the venue so I can advise our security team of this.
I look forward to hearing from you in due course.
Kind regards,

Well they have said in no uncertain terms No payment no reservation. We can have one of two slots for the whole bus and they are in the message received today. Any thoughts? Will need to pay £300 to reserve.

for the Yellow Duckmarine is currently available for Private Hire. The cost to hire this vehicle would be £300.00 and would cater for 24 passengers.

We are unable to book without payment, due to the fact that it is bank holiday weekend we are very busy. As well as the 10.30 we have a 11.15 available at the moment with no one booked on. When you do book we will require full payment by debit/credit card and we will also need a mobile contact number.

John, I wouldn't book that duck tour just going off the numbers. I'm not going to be there cowasaki and crew won't be there so even if everyone else turns up including the hopefuls your only at 24 people making it £12.50 each or over £15 if only the confirmed people turn up. I have done a few things like this and people always drop out at the last minute things like poor weather will put people off and were having plenty of that at the moment.

Getting the cash up front is an option and is the only way to do it or you will end up loosing out especially if you only charge the prices that they quote on the website to the tune of about £70. 24 adults at the standard rate is less than £300 so the charter is a rip off.

I don't know how busy it gets, you could do a group (10+) booking a few days before and get a 10% discount or I would look at turning up on the day and get there early and try to book the full group on a tour once you know how many are there. I actually think the group prices and the charter price are not really offering big enough savings to stump up the cash in advanced.

Yes have to agree on this matey I can't afford to lose this sort of money so I will suggest we just turn up and see if we can get on when we are there. I would imagine they will be busy so it may be we just head to the eye instead. I'm sure we will find a load to do on the day anyway

Liz and I definately want to do the Duck tour, and I think you are right it may be busy (especially if the weather is good, which unusally for a CGeezer meet it is looking like it should be by lunchtime).

As we are due to meet at albert dock can I suggest we make the meeting point outside their ticket office (http://www.theyellowduckmarine.co.uk/routeMap.php) in albert dock and those that want to do the tour get booked on a tour. Preferably early IMO, i.e. 10:30 so we can get the full day shooting elsewhere)

26-08-2010, 12:31
You can park at the PierHead. Not sure of prices, but that will depend on how long you are staying. Might be cheaper to park at one of the railway stations just outside the city centre and train in. Parking there will be free. I'll be on the train; it's just so much easier, and probably cheaper.

Just seen that you are planning to stay till evening. That will cost an arm and a leg for car parking anywhere in the city, and you might not be allowed to park for 10/12 hours in any one place.

26-08-2010, 12:37
Don't park on the Liverpool - Hunt's Cross stretch of Merseyrail. There is engineering work and a replacement bus service. You are better looking at Merseyrail Northern - the line that runs to Southport. Park at Waterloo and you should be OK. Any further out and train fares start to rise. Much closer in and there are no dedicated car parks. Despite the scouser's alleged predeliction for theivery car parks are usually safe enough places.

Jimmy_Lemon
26-08-2010, 12:38
Damn, had forgotten about this. Going to have to see if I can re-arrange some stuff as I want to come.

Parking wise; marcel and I have parked in here (http://www.q-park.co.uk/Parkwithus/Parkinglocations/ParkinglocationsAZ/tabid/1291/qparkParkingLocatorvw3377/parkingDetail/ParkingID/582/language/en-US/Default.aspx). Not overly cheap but nearby, and safe.

Bad news guys. Been in Birkenhead all morning, with a view of the Pier Head. If anyone is going just to get the classic shot of the Pier Head then you're in for a bit of a let down. The middle of the three buildings - The Cunard Building - has scaffolding up and white tarpaulins all over it. The other two - the Liver Building and M.D.&H.Co - buildings are OK, but the panoramic view is spoiled I'm afraid.

Hey John, thanks very much. :) I know we spoke about this quite a bit yesterday but I'm not sure what you want to hear lol.

The dials go the wrong way on the Nikon, the lens unscrews the wrong way, the front dial is in a weird place and the CF door squeaks a bit, but the 5D isn't perfect either. :p The 5D is simpler and probably quicker to use imo.

I guess the best way to summarise would be:

- Three of the cathedral shots were taken at ISO 6400 and none of them have had any noise reduction.
- Not once did it hunt for focus.

The 5D could have matched it in most respects but not those. And yet:

- (I hope) I'll still use the 5D

It's not often that you need that fractionally better performance and it produces lovely images. The 5D mark II is a step up from the 5D classic and people like Jeff Ascough and Jasmine Star (off the top of my head) have been using them at weddings for years. Don't get gear lust, it gets expensive.
