The bike isn't the new toy, the SB-25, ebay radio triggers and Portaflash light stands are. Oh and the piece of A4 paper used to make a snoot.

I'll add some more and explain what I was upto when I'm back from hospital and get over the aneasthetic.

If I don't finish this by the end of the week you'll know the NHS has bumped me off;)

The metz cost me about £280 from Kerso but it's a very good bit of kit and I bought it for on camera TTL use before I got into the off camera stuff. You can use any old flash for off camera stuff so long as you can make manual power adjustments and there's a way of triggering it.

The SB-25 flash was used and cost me about £35 from MPB photographic who are one of the advertisers on this site.

Light stands from Tecno and were £9 each and radio triggers plus extra reciever were about £30 from Gadget Infinity on Ebay.

Piece of paper to make the snoot-free from the storemans' printer.

I also got one of them 5 in 1 reflector from Jessops for £20 but to be honest I'm not convinced it had much effect.

If you want to have a go yourself or find out more visit this site Strobist (http://strobist.blogspot.com/).

What I originally wanted was a picture of the bike against the garage door, I was after a kind of grimy look, underexposed background and a natural vignette. Despite it being an overcast day I just couldn't get the effect I wanted. My camera has a rubbish sync speed of 1/125. Absolute pony. Such a slow shutter speed meant that to under expose the background enough I had to step down the aperture to about F9 or something like that even with a CP fitted. Problem with that is that F9 doesn't let much flash light in even at full power. That meant I had to make do with a background that was much brighter than I'd have liked.

It's the first time I'd played with my off camera flash setup so there was a lot of trial and even more error but this is the best of the bunch really. (Not an exericise in composition I hasten to add.)

The setup.

I knew I wasn't gonna get what I wanted outside so moved into our nice and dark hangar instead. Eventually after lots of faffing with settings to sort the background out and then playing with the lights to sort the bike out I got these two.

I only wish I had another light to light the front of the bike from the left because the reflector really didn't add much light to it.

2nd from last shot is ace.
Shame about the wheel cropped off, but as you say, not an exercise in comp.
Almost has a brochure feel about it. Nice.
