Hi all,
I am pretty new to photography I have a Canon eos 400d
and I am looking for a good tripod can any of you people on here give me some advice or any links to good tripod sites. I have looked on ebay but to be honest they all look the same to me:help:
any advice greatly recieved :shrug:

First things first; What sort of budget you looking at? Secondly, what your going to be using it for mostly? Birds, landscapes, macro etc. Manfrotto do a very big ranxge of very good tripods, so their site is worth looking at. They also have a tripod selector that might help you.

Brand snob? What do you need to be convinced?

As an engineer with one of these tripods sat next to me now, I can tell you that its light weight, very adjustable and has well designed and engineered locks. what else does a tripod have to do?
Maybe I'm naive and what I've purchased will affect my photo's and end up as a pile of extruded aluminium but for £10.99 its worth a go, esp as a noob.

That was meant as joke btw. No need to take it to heart. Yes, it may very well do a good job, but as for getting what I would class as a 'good' tripod for the cost of a few pints of beer im still not convinced, otherwise surely companies like Manfrotto or Giottos would go out of bussiness. Here at work we have quite a few Jessops own brand ones which I thought were alright and wondered how one could be made better. but after getting my Manfrotto, I can really tell the difference. Also after you have seen £1500 of equipment fall off the top of a tripod because the head snapped in half, you might consider investing in a slightly better one. All imo of course.

You just managed to touch a nerve. its pet hate of mine that things become more expensive because of a badge.

that said, it my "budget" tripod broke and dropped my camera I would defo be pished!!

Unfortunately, with tripods you tend to get what you pay for. I started with a cheapie and soon realised it's shortcomings, it was unstable and the head that came with it was the most fiddly, useless piece of junk. It is not about brand snobbery either, we have all spent a small fortune on our cameras, probably even more on lenses (and if you haven't, you will ;) ) only to scrimp on the solid platform it sometimes needs to sit on.

You really need to look at your requirements, if you are going running up and down mountains you would not want something like the Manfrotto 055 as it is quite a heavy beast and you would probably want a carbon fibre 'pod to keep the weight down. If you are looking at a general purpose tripod try something like the Manfrotto 190 range, the only reason I mention this particular brand is that they are the only ones I have knowledge of. Apparently the Benro CF ones on ebay are supposed to be quite good value.

Don't forget the head, a good one is as important as the legs.

I just bought a goittos 9180 including the mh 1001 ball head from warehouse express for £110 + delivery, its a bit heavy compared to the 055 but cheaper and its solid, well worth the money heres the link http://www.warehouseexpress.com/?/specials/slrp.html its part way down the page :)

Well I just bought a Manfrotto 390 Tripod :| it`s a start I suppose I can always upgrade to a better model later on when the piggy bank is a bit fatter:D
