I decided to give a couple of shots from my Harris trip (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=24906) the hdr treatment to see how they have turned out. I am not convinced that these make more enduring shots although they have a certain drama. Any thoughts?

They look like nice moody shots, but appear a little on the dark side on my monitor.
Edit - have just looked at the originals, and the HDR ones above do appear much more dramatic and punchier. The originals look dark too, but it could be my screen as it's not calibrated.

The first definatley works for me - very nice treatment Gary
I'm not sure about the second and i think it may be because of the sun splash..... look incongruous given the tone of the rest of the shot
They look fine on my laptop screen, nice and moody, quite dramatic. Trouble is I know on the calibrated CRT they will look on the dark side. The HDR seems to have worked nicely though so can they be lifted just a notch?
I agree. They are dark and could do with level adjustments or some dodging.
It looks a bit dark to me. I thought I'd have a play by taking the original posted in the earlier thread and lightening a bit using levels and using Velvia type action, I then combined the two and adjusted opacity and a layer mask to bring back the sky, finally I used a Lab Boost Colour Mode action I have.
Just a very quick edit but I'm sure you get the idea.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I actually liked them being dark but was unsure about the processing. My next course of action (once I find the time!)was something like Hackers - thanks Colin.

Just viewed these again from home and have to say - on a proper monitor they look just as i would have liked to process them. So extra top markes from me

Yer, that first ones come out as a rack of a shot. My eye follows down the arret to the left and straight out to the islands in the centre of the shot and then to the sunset. Perfect!
I love the lead in lines from the rocks in the second one. First reaction was to say that they are a bit dark but having studied them a while longer I'm inclined to change my mind - they really suit at forbidding landscape!
Where were these taken from HUN? Looks like it ought to have been Golden Road / East coast area?

Thanks again guys. No west side Witch Abhainn Suidhe castle is just out of view in lower right of first shot.
Ahh - that bit of road is marked on our map for next year's trip!
Crop those foreground rocks out in the second one, and it'll be fantastic!!

I still like the second, I liked it the first time and you've defiantly improved on that one with the hdr. ... I like Collins but I think I'd favour a mix somewhere between the two.
:agree: Love the velvia look, but think the dark processing really adds to the scene.
