Made the decision and a start on getting my kit together.
Bought a Canon 400D today. It came with a 18-55mm lens and extra I got a 4gig memory card and a uv filter(to protect the lens)

Next step is to save for some lenses. First will be a good zoom lens. Then a decent macro lens.
I saw a 100-400mm f4.5 lens in the shop window although it was quite dear.
Things I am interested in are wildlife, aircraft and motor-sports amongst other things.
Suggestions welcome for what lenses to aim for and any extra kit I might need. I do have a fairly sturdy tri-pod from way back.

Think this is the one.

If you only want one lens you wont go wrong with the 100-400mm as avery good alrounder. Want the best IQ then something like the 70-200mm L IS f2.8, 300mm L IS f4, and 400mm f5.6. But that will cost you a fair packet, and weighty to carry around.

The 100-400mm will work with a 1.4 tc provided you mod the cano one, or get an dumb non comunitcaing one. like the Kenco's i believe.

I managed to borrow a 100-400mm so will do a complete comparative thread to show the differance's when i get the chance, hopefully tomorrow.

And don't be in too much of a hurry to ditch the kit lens either you can get some pretty good shots with it
