View Full Version : City Night Shoot - Glasgow

Any interest in a couple of hours night shoot.
Have an inkling to shoot a few lit buildings. bridges etc in the city.
Had in mind a week night when it's likely to be quieter and meeting about an hour or so before sunset and shooting for hour after sunset and possibly a pie and couple of pints in the horseshoe bar. Be back tucked up in bed before midnight.
I may be interested, but as travelling through from Edinburgh on train would need to meet somewhere near Queens St. station. Alternatively, I could drive but would need somewhere with good free parking and easy to find.
I don't know Glasgow at all and new to night photography so would need all the guidance I could get.
Also I do a standby roster (every second week, Fri to Fri), so not available until Fri next week.
I could be tempted by this. So stick me on the list.

Hi Jim
Parking after six is free in city, just finding a space. Usually not a big problem.
Iy's a bit of a journey for you, so would be under pressure for you to make most of it.
I've done a few night shoots, would be happy to help, although not an expert by any means. Tripod is essential.
Will see if any others want to register an interest and we can work out a date.

OK Jim
There seems to be a bit of interest and it's only been on a day or so.
Any day w/c 30 is fine for me too, although preferrably not the Friday.
I'll stick my neck out and suggest :
Monday, Aug 30. (This is new date )
So, can we have probables for this date.

Hi Mark
I'd like to have another go in this area. There are a few bridges and casino near plus the possibility of city centre or, going the other way, SSEC / Armadillo / BBC / Quay areas which, as you say have all been done to death, but alway a bit of a challenge to improve on ones (excuse the royal ref ... must forget Eaton) last shoot.
Also I'm very happy to share my very limited experience on night shooting, so if anybody is hiding behind the door thinking, "I'll look daft / don't have a scooby" then no question is too daft / basic... just as long as you're prepared for an equally daft reply - No, we'll do our best to help as much as poss.
I'll leave this a few days and then we can all see definites / probables / possibles or no chance.
Cheers

Hi Martin
Central Station is ten min stroll from Clyde bridges and opens option for city centre if we decide that.
or could meet in any bar close to station, although personally I like to be completely compos mentis at start of shoot so would be a soda for me.
Could we have an indication of interest in
bridges / quay / armadillo
OR
City Centre
so that we all know what we're turning up for.
I'm happy for either / both if time allows.
I will probably be picking Martin up, so anywhere within easy reach of parking. I am happy taking night shots of anything, so will leave it to you guys that are more familiar with the locality.
I too will not be drinking as I am driving, also treading a very thin line after the Edinbugh Fringe Street Photography meet!

I am happy to let you guys decide where we shoot. I don't know Glasgow all that well apart from the city centre. If Stu is going i'll come along with him if the offer of a lift still stands and if he's not then the city centre will be ok with me as i'll be on the train.
I'm a bridges/quay/Armadillo sort of guy, so that's my vote.

Sorry about that Thomas, but think it's too late in the day to change now - maybe next time.
Everything still on go for next Monday. Here's hoping we get a good sky and lovely light.
From what I take from posts most aren't too bothered about city or bridges and a couple want to do the bridges so, think everyone (excepting Flash, who's not going as far as I'm aware) will be happy with bridges.
Plan :
Meet under clock in Central Station.
Sunset on Monday is 8:17 so think if we meet at 7pm for 7:15 will be enough time to get down to :
Suggested Route with couple of shots I've still got in my gallery here (Click for larger).
1. Casino / KingGV bridge http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/gallery/data/500/thumbs/CasinoBridgeWeb.jpg (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=86950)
(about 10-15min stroll) then we can have time there to set up gear for dusk shots - or go straight to Squinty bridge - 5 mins further on.
2 Next walk to Squinty, some shots there.
3 Walk down to Quay / Clyde Arc Bridge Area (Plenty Neon) few shots
http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/gallery/data/500/thumbs/QuayFky_Bweb.jpg (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=64747)
4 Cross Arc bridge - few of BBC building / Science Centre from opposite bank and SSEC.
5 Return along north bank to opposite side Squinty along to Casino and back to Central.
Expect to be back a Central no later than 10pm. This will also allow time for some shooting around "Heillan Man's Umbrella" area below station.
If 10pm seems a little late we can easily cut out parts, spend less time shooting at each stop or run like bloody hell  ( No way I'm snailling it)
If it's bucketing rain we can just shoot around the Central, grab a pint and head home.
Any update on shooters below ?

Where would be the best place to park given meeting place and time?
Hi Jim
Basically anywhere close to Central where you think it will be OK to leave car.
If I take car (coming from South Side from Mway) I come off at BothwellSt (Oneway) and park close to C station and have never had any problem.
Your plan looks good, hopefully we'll get a nice sunset.
Jim, I'll PM you my mobile number mate.
Out of interest, for a newbie of the night, as it were, what kit's needed for night photography? I have camera, lenses, tripod. Not sure, for example, about filters. Think I read somewhere about some neon filter.
Possibly magenta, I don't have one but looking at getting one for Monday.
Martin - pm an address & I'll pick you up from there.

Will my canon 70-200 f4L be any good for monday? I used to use the 17-55 but i only have one lens right now and haven't used it at all for either night stuff or landscape.
Possibly magenta, I don't have one but looking at getting one for Monday.
Bloody hell! They don't come cheap. There's one on Amazon, at 58mm, for £103.
I can tweak the magenta with Photoshop, for now, I suppose.
I am using Cokin, just started using filters and this is within my price range for starters. Magenta P series £18.99 Warehouse Express
Ah, I've not really looked into Cokin ones. I think, because of my initial UV 'filters', I've been sticking to the screw-in formula, with my polariser and, new today, ND 0.6.
I think I saw a Cokin filter holder in Jessops for £25. Off to investigate...
A remote shutter release would be handy to take a long too, although the built-in self-timer does the job. :)

Looks fine to me Scott. You'll be able to zoom in no prob - just be aware a long lens is going to be more susceptible to movement.
I'll probably be taking along my 70 -200, 50 and 20mm.
Suggested Kit :
Camera / lens / Tripod (or Bean bag etc)
A remote release makes things a lot easier
(or make sure you know how to set your camera timer.)
Filters (for control freaks :D - Be interested to see / compare the results )
Small Torch may be useful in dim lighting
Small snack / water

I've still not got my internet back, so using library again.

Will try and reformat for PC and add a few shots tomorrow - got one absolute cracker of the parkour girls - totally blown away with it.... and a few more I'm pretty happy with.
Waiting to see Jim's bus, light trail shot, on Glasgow Arc.
I waited for about fifteen minutes for a bus to go by, just gave up and was changing my lens when the damned thing drove passed, however Jim's in-camera shot looked good.
Stu - your absence has been noted.
Maybe catch up with the others who couldn't make it, next time.

Thanks. That was the shot that Martin helped me with (in switching from remote release to 2 sec timer) as I was having a torrid time getting something without the lights glaring. On the big screen the lighting was the purplest of purple so I chanced a B&W conversation and it simply looked much better.

Cheers Gramps
... curious - What idea did it ngive you ?
Just that here in Bristol we've got a bridge near the Waterfront that is constructed of stainless steel and illuminated at night - yours reminded me of it and so it presents a photo opportunity for me as I've done no night photography up until now.

Good luck with the shoot - and don't forget to take a minder along
Lol, if you're game for Glasgow I'm game for Bristol - no 'Glasgow Kisses' down this way :)
We were lucky enough to meet one of the Glasgow Clydeside residents who needed help put his jacket on and offered us some vodka as a goodwill gesture in return.
He was persistent in asking why we take photos of Glessga and wasn't going to move on until he got his answer. Looking down the Clyde and pointing in that direction, I explained that we weren't taking photos of his beloved city, we were in fact taking photos of the WAY OUT.....to which he promptly left. Pleasant chap.
We were again lucky to cross paths with a misplaced tourist with no sense of direction. Wandering the streets of Glasgow with a laptop in his arms and asking the locals for directions to Shettleston Road with Google maps displayed on his laptop isn't exactly advisable in Glessga. He was really on his way to Edinburgh!
Strange city, but nice pics anyway!
Great shots from everyone, was a great meet!
Okay, so here's a few of the Parkour chaps. How I wish I had the 70-200 with me... :wall:

Great shots all. How is the Fireworks prep going BigEye ?
I wonder if the German tourist got to Shettleston yet ....
Thanks Barry and Charles.
Sent a few low-res/watermarked shots off the other day to the contact on the site and asked about future events but not received any feedback yet.
Fireworks tomorrow night, probably turn out to be a disaster.

Hi KayJay
Thanks for comments.
Haven't seen you at any meets since the Uni shoot.
I expect you're too busy to go out and play :D

Hi Roddy
Looks like you missed the boat / bridge on this one.
Think it's unlikely another bridge shoot is on the cards in near future.
Might be a possibility of a city night shoot if there was interest though.
Could we make it along Shettleston Road?

I'm here for another 4 weeks so if there is a night shoot I would be keen. I'll keep an eye on this to see what interest there is. Thanks!

There won't be any interest unless someone starts a new thread suggesting a meet.
Just decide when & where and what you want to shoot, start new thread and you'll see who might be interested.
The guys on here like plenty time to mull things over, so I suggest you get on to it straight away if you've only got four weeks :D
I may be interested....as Rockshifter suggests - start a new thread.
