View Full Version : Poll - Nottingham meeting #2

Landscape71
22-08-2010, 22:46
There has been quite a bit of interest expressed by many members regarding another meeting within the Nottingham area after Nigel's Wollaton Park meeting on Sunday 8th August. The original thread can be found here (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=245406).

The general consensus from the previous thread has been inconclusive regarding a definite date and location, with several very different suggestions appearing.

This thread, together with the poll will clinch it - anyone with an interest, please take part!

Barring a sudden change of view, the most consistent location suggested has been Castle Marina and a walk up the Canal, on that basis, that's the route!

I'll update regarding a meeting place with suitable car parking later in the thread - the Castle Marina area has no shortage of possibilities in that respect!

A meeting time of 10AM should offer a fairly relaxed walk before it gets busy towards the centre.

The current list of members potentially interested in the walk taking place on Holiday Monday, 30th August -

Me! (Mark)

[U]MEETING LOCATION

10AM by the sign at the entrance to the Baltimore Exchange on Castle Bridge Road off Castle Boulevard - Google map (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Castle+Boulevard,+Nottingham&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=15.508209,43.330078&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Castle+Blvd,+Nottingham,+United+Kingdom&ll=52.945843,-1.16583&spn=0.000241,0.000661&t=h&z=21&layer=c&cbll=52.945843,-1.16583&panoid=AloIrvCKRYFEXH_-4tltHg&cbp=12,315.34,,0,5)

There are side streets in the area as well as the car parks for The Baltimore Exchange, Sainsbury's, PC World, Pets At Home, Comet and Curry's etc. I'm sure a brief drive around will turn up a suitable parking spot! :)

Hi Mark, Thanks for taking up the baton...

I probably won't make it, so won't vote. Hope you have fun.

Why not try Colwick Park or even Holme Pierre Pont as they usually have some kind of thing happening on a sunday or BH mondays.

Sadly can't do monday - but if there is a sudden and dramatic swing in the voting then I'm free Sunday.

if I get desperately bored and come up to Loughborough, will be up for either day... doubt it though.

Hi guys, I'm running a squirt boat competition at Hpp on the Saturday and Sunday. Hopefully a few sparkly glittery boats strutting around showing off; all of the pilots would probably be more than happy to pose or repeat something in exchange for a few good pics for sponsors.

Sounds like a good opportunity, thanks for the heads-up dogyakker.

From the poll, the walk on the canal from Castle Marina looks fairly certain atm to be taking place on Monday but if anyone is looking for something to do on Saturday or Sunday, taking a trip out to Holme Pierrepont could certainly be worthwhile.

If I get a chance I might well pop along!

The walk is open to anyone Dan; if you have the time, please join us.

They're a great opportunity to meet fellow TP members and you can pick up tips and learn in a relaxed and casual way! :)

Posting on here gives an idea of how many we should be expecting before we set off.

I mentioned Colwick in the thread from the previous walk at Wollaton Hall located here (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=245406).

This thread is a follow up due to the level of interest in another Nottingham walk.

Colwick didn't get any support, but the canal walk from Castle Marina was the most popular suggestion.

Thanks Richard, I'll update the initial post and add you and Vicky.

If the weather is bad we might be rained off but if looks reasonable, possibly including the occasional shower we might still be able to manage something, albeit with a subtle change of plan!

I'll be keeping an eye on the forecast - fingers crossed! :)

If it does go ahead on the Monday, I might try and make it...

The poll is working and being used - it's currently showing eight to one in favour of Bank Holiday Monday on three systems at my end - I'm not sure why you aren't seeing it Nigel.

I hope you can manage along. :)

I'll add you to the list , at least on a provisional basis for now!

I'll probably bring a friend along with me who's into togging too.

Weather is the obvious caveat to turning up, but having looked at metcheck it looks like it'll be a fairly nice morning, so look forward to meeting you all then

Metcheck is typically reliable - Metcheck Bank Holiday Monday Nottingham Forecast (http://www.metcheck.com/V40/UK/FREE/dayforecast.asp?zipcode=NG7%201GX&day=2) and I've been holding off for the Met. Office 5 day forecast via the BBC - BBC/Met.Office Bank Holiday Monday Nottingham Forecast (http://news.bbc.co.uk/weather/forecast/346?&search=nottingham&itemsPerPage=10&region=uk)

So far it's certainly looking promising with both sources broadly in agreement regarding a fairly bright and dry day!

[Update]
Saturday 28th August - The outlook for Monday is a less positive but isn't bad.

I don't know the area that well - Tend not to go into Nottingham too often my Tetanus Jabs are not upto date ;-)

I assume there is parking around where the intended meet is, if directions or a PostCode for satnav are available it would be appreciated.

Oi, don't be rude! :bat: None of that Notts/Derby rivalry allowed on Monday! :D:D

Mark updated the OP to include some details, but the postcode for the Pizza Hut (which is directly opposite the Baltimore Exchange where we are meeting) is NG7 1GX. Hope that helps you get here! :)

In addition to Sam's post that includes the postcode of the meeting place, I'll take the opportunity to reiterate the location of the meeting using Google Streetview - the link included below is also available on the first post in this thread.

Google Maps (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Castle+Boulevard,+Nottingham&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=15.508209,43.330078&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Castle+Blvd,+Nottingham,+United+Kingdom&ll=52.945843,-1.16583&spn=0.000241,0.000661&t=h&z=21&layer=c&cbll=52.945843,-1.16583&panoid=AloIrvCKRYFEXH_-4tltHg&cbp=12,315.34,,0,5)

Using the icons on Streetview available via the link, you can explore the area prior to the meeting.

If there are any problems or questions, please let me know!

Lovely images Mike.

Your first image posted; "On the waterfront" has strong contrast and the reflections add perfectly to its depth.

I missed the subjects of both of your other captures during the walk but given Sam's insightful description of the Crocodile - "that crummy plastic croc", you've definitely given it an air of authenticity! :D

The Castle is one of those blink and you've missed it moments along the Canal; it only appears briefly between a couple of buildings on the Canal-side!
