Ok The thread about photo budies got me thinking about this. Tennis is just about my favorite sport to shoot just after basketball, and seing as once again I did not get my ass into gear and get a press pass for this year, it might be nice to meet some people there instead of camping out alone on the outside courts like I do every year.

So what days are you all planning to go this year (if you are going). I usually try to get Wendsday off to go in the first week, and then try to make Saterday (but this is kind of crowded). Definately going in the first week as there is more action on the outside courts.

Anybody wanta meetup?

Can't 'do' Wimbledon I'm afraid but going to Queens tomorrow ... :D

Never been to either tournament before so tell me ... ... is it really worth taking a DSLR and, apart from flash being a :nono: ... are there likely to be any restrictions on photography generally ...

I have never had a problem getting into either the Australian Open (back when I was living in Melbourne) or Wimbledon (last year) with a lot of year (we talking two bodies, and 4 lenses including a 70-200). This is the first year I have had a 400 so this might be interesting.

I have shot alot of sports before, and I would probably not go if they did not let me in with my photographic gear.

If you are interested in some sample shots I got last year with 70-200 on 20D you can go to http://www.pbase.com/franchisejuan/. Sorry still at work so cannot give you a direct link.

Thanx FJ ...

http://graphic-forums.com/images/smilies/editsmily.gif ... some good stuff on your site m8 ... ... so I should be alright with just an 18 - 200mm VR and possibly 50mm 1.4 as I don't really want to lug the whole gear bag with me all day ...

It depends on what kinds of shots you want. If it is just general mood and atomosphere shots, then probably, but I am there to shoot the players in action, and usually when I have a 70-200 on a monopod, people get out of my way, and for that matter I can bluff my way into some press areas without a pass if I want to.

200 is probaly long enough for half body shots if you are on the net, but not if you are on the other side of the court. Your 50 is going to be useless for the most part but you might as well bring it (I always bring my 35 even though sometimes I don't use it much). If you can manage it lugg your 80-400 VR.
