I want to create an image for a friend who is mad about his car. What i want the end result to be is a canvas with three or four pictures of his pride and joy on it. It will also have some tech spec type text but i know how to do that.

My question is how do i add an image into a new canvas and retain the ability to make adjustments. I have done cut and paste but i have to resize using trial and error and then recut/paste wuntil i get the "look" i want.

It might not be clear what i want to do but any help is appreciated.

You should be able to each image as a layer and still make adjustments until you "save" or "save as" and that should merge the images to a background canvas
If I remember correctly you right click to "copy" then right click to "paste" on the background you have created, then you get the option as paste as a "new layer" or new image

What Cobra said .........

you can also click and drag the picture onto the background and it will create a new layer then select the pick tool to move, resize or rotate etc.
