To celebrate this new macro section(how long has it been open anyway, I might just have been unobservant and missed it before:thinking: ) I have decided to post another;

Well I have seen many grasshoppers in my time but never one as green as that. Sure its not made of plastic

Wow! Dfefinately one for Ven! ;)
I thought it must be a really unusual critter but a quick Google reveals its a common Chorthippus Parallelus ... and yes that green!
Nice one!

It is actually a Stripe Winged Grasshopper (Stenobothrus lineatus)

Yes they ARE green...but a more natural green......

(this photo was not taken by me - just using as a comparison)

yours seems to have a BLUE tinge to it.

Wondering if you have a style set in camera where the colour might be slightly off??

Not my shot .......... read woman!!! :D

Do you use RAW Messiah Kahn, or have some style set in-camera.... maybe the white balance was out a bit?

Unfortunately not as Lightroom doesn't support the D40x yet(come on Adobe.. im waiting:( ) You may be right that it was a case of the whitebalance being slightly off. I most likely had it set to Auto (Exif shows 0), so I can't see why it would have shifted too much. I fairly sure you are right with your identification, but there seem to be slight differences. One the one you posted, the end of the legs are distinctly orange, looking at other pics of the one I took, this isn't the case. The green fades out, but not to such a bright orange, more a dull brown/slight green. Also look at the antennae; The ones on mine seem shorter, thicker and more defined in terms of segments. Also(it might be just due to the angle) but the body on mine looks shorter relative to the legs. Could it be some sort of local variation? the thing was pretty damn tiny as well, so maybe it was a young one. Does the colour shift or fade with age?

Maybe it was a youngun.
If you look here ...

http://www.natureportfolio.co.uk/insects/crickets_grasshoppers.php (first pic)

... they have short stumpy antenae like in your shot, but if you look in the pics here ...

http://www.biopix.dk/Species.asp?Language=la&Searchtext=Chorthippus%20parallelus&Category=Insekter

... they seem slightly longer.

Also, in most of the images the grasshopper is in muted brown surroundings, where as in yours its a green on green kind of thing.
Do you think that could have affected the tones in some way?

You are right......i put the wrong picture in!! :bonk:

I have now rectified it and you will see the Stripe winged grasshopper has short antennae!
