View Full Version : Out Fishing
Hi
I'm new to photography, and looking to improve my photos , but still have a long way to go:'(. Any heres one of a heron I took last week. I'm looking for ways to improve the photo. I have already had to sharpen the photo a little and messed around with levels. Can you give me your impressions/ways to improve.

Thanks
There's lots of ways you could crop this shot for a different result, but I rather like it as it is with the reflection and the foreground ripples adding interest. It's a nice shot showing the heron in it's natural surroundings IMO.
It's over-sized though - please reduce it to 800 pixels on the longest side. ;)

Not too bad a pic there Taxi ... ... and as CT says lots of things you could do with it if you are personally not satisfied with it as it is ...
Here's my Q & D take on it with a little levels etc tweak ...

Very quick crop and brightened it up a tad with a little more sharpening too ... just a quick idea of how it looks but not necessarily better ... :D
:p
Hi Venomator
I prefer the crop that you have made, by taking the top part of the photo away, it does make it more interesting.
Being new to photography, there seems to be many skills that need to be picked up, composition of the photo being one of them. I am now beginning to appreciate the amount of work that as gone into some of the photos on this site  and how difficult it can be to get that perfect shot.
My father has been taking photo's for years and makes it look so easy. I can now see the amount of thought that he has to put into some of his photo's.
I really like this photo, agree it needs a crop though.
My take on it :)

HI Susan
Thanks for the feed back, how have you managed to get the photo looking so sharp?
I just cropped, leveled and sharpened it in Picasa2, its quick to use for photo edits on here. I have other photo editing progs but I'm still learning them and I'm slow.:D

Prefer your version Susane...
Sorry Ven but yours is a bit too bright and cropped very tightly.
Very nice effort there taxi - start saving for a LONG lens!

Anton, I need to master the camera before I start buying anything else:'( .
I can also see your point, what lens would you recommend? This photo was taken with a 40-150mm lens, which is my longest zoom lens.

Hello Taxi and:embarrassed: WELCOME TO TPF!!:welcome: !!:D
That being said - sorry - cannot see your exif data.
What kit do you use?
exif data is f/4.2 @ 1/160 iso 400
equipment used is a Olympus E500 with a 40 - 170mm lens.

Exif sounds reasonable and the kit sounds good too!
I have heard some folks were very happy with those e500's.
Play a lot and post often so we can see how you are doing!

Thats the plan!!
AS a camera to learn with, I think it will give me some excellent results. It was purchased more due to pricing than anything else. Although I did read a few good reviews on the camera before buying.
Once I have a good feel for the hobby,I will look at better equipment.
