Doesn't work for me im afraid lass. As you say, its a bit sparse and the composition doesn't do it for me. I also think the lighting is a bit too hard and cold.

I think a shallower depth of field and a different background may have done it a bit better. Good on ya for trying though.
Gonna have to agree with MK on this one Lady, think you have a bit too much black space & the composition isn't quite there, not a bad shot by any means but I've seen you do much better
I do however like the lighting & the colouring on the leaves, just not sure that the subject shows it to its best effect.

thanks folks for the comments
I did think it was a bit sparse and black - but I liked the way the light was coming through the leaves.
what sort of background would be better - a more natural one perhaps?? any tips and suggestions are gratefully received:)
bloody frustrating this photography lark:bang: especially when you really don't have a clue what you're doing LOL!!!!
Lady ! I like it 'so there'. Spars or not there is a lot to be said by 'less is more'. Stark, hard, etc. can be seen on more than one way. So. If you got what you intended, fine by me!

I also quite like it!
The guys who have commented on the composition, how would you have composed it? I can't see anything wrong with it myself, but I'd be interested to know how you would have composed it?

I would have had the stem coming in from nearer the bottom corner, and the leaves/flower positioned higher in the frame. I also think a slightly tighter crop would have helped to reduce some of the blackness. As for the background, I really don't mind the black, its just that there is too much of it. Although it might be worth seeing what a dark green background would look like

Ah, ok, I see where you are coming from now.
Due to the web dying on me my contribution will follow.
So basically the image (if I have done it right) fits 5x4 pretty good. The magic (publishable) 5x4! Pretty simple really! As I said good image.

^^bugger them^^
I like it the way it is, save a little crop to get rid excess baggage. Nice backlighting and a good colour contrast make it sing.
Bloody philistines ;)
Did you mean more like this MK?
