View Full Version : SCOTS MEET ?? 8/9th Sep 2007 Glencoe
I know I'm not Scots, but! Seems to me there are more than just a few of us living in this beautiful country. So. Why not a Scots Meet? I am well prepared to travel (you have to be up here) and I am sure theres some good crack to be had as a group. Any Ideas??

When I say two hours closer I still don't know how long it would take me to hit the border :p
Also if this happened to take place in the later end of August I would up in Edinburgh anyway ;)
I will keep an eye on this, see what happens :D
Or 7 if you want tea at my house:lol:

Skipton, you'd be better taking a run to Liverpool and getting the Ryanair to Inverness, that is assuming the meet is in the Highlands. Which I would be up for too.

Glencoe is beautiful at the moment. I took a few shots of Blackrock Cottage on my way through it a couple of weeks ago and got a few at Rannoch Moor after passing back through the Glen.
While just finding this board today, I'll watch this post as I go up the highlands at least every second weekend anyway, so anywhere in Scotlqand is fine here.

Flickr had a meet just 20 minutes from my house and I missed it! I would not like to miss this one.
July and August are VERY busy in the highlands and getting accommodation is slightly more tricky unless you have booked in advance.
Sunrise and sunset are also a bit more accessible if you leave it until August/ September.(Sep ranges from 6.30-7am and 8.17pm to 7pm respectively)
Entry points are Inverness if you want to do the North West or Skye. Glasgow if Argyll, Glencoe are your preferences.
There are a few here on the forum that are Inverness(ish) based so would make sense.
I may be able to help with logistics and definitely can help advise on where to stay as I supply most Highland Hotels and restaurants. Usually best option is to pick a large village hotel (the Priory Mike?) as that can keep people together and they can "launch" easier in the morning once a direction decided.
Many of you know the area but here are a few quick suggestions from Inverness:
Glen Afric - 40mins
Loch Ness - 10-30mins
John O`Groats - 2 hours
Ullapool - 1 hour
Lochinver 2 hours
Torridon Mountains - 1 hour
Gairloch - 1 hour 30 mins
Skye - 2 hours to bridge
All of these are fairly easy as roads are trunk arterial routes, going "against the grain" in the Highlands is slow.
HTH.

No rooms in the Priory until last weeks in September now, I would guess the Lovat is the same. Actually thinking about it I would imagine all the local small to medium hotels will be booked up now until September. Maybe everyone needs to take a tent. :D

Also quite a few along the East coast so that's another possibility, although in terms of scenery it's probably not traditionally what people would consider to be Scotland.
I'm pretty easy in terms of location (although I'd prefer somewhere in the HIghlands), biggest problems will be dates for me, already it's looking like 18/19th August, maybe the weekend after, is about the only clear time I've got over the next couple of months.
What about the slightly larger holiday type hotels. Maybe Lochyness as a base?
Reasons being there are three lochs easily driven tobut not overly visited (ithink) away from lochness and quite a few holiday type hotels in the Drumnadrochit area. What do you know of those lochs DOD, HUN and others? - Sorry just realised HUN mentioned 'Glen Affric' in his list.
Eastish is cool too. The Moray area from Forres through to Buckie doesn't have the spectacular mountains but it does have great coastline and many many distilleries along with some old stuff.
 Great idea - is this a 'boys only' trip or are we all invited????
Gotta say favourite for me (not easiest) would be North West coast. It would all pretty much be new to me:thinking: anyway N,S,E or W so its a matter of where gets the most to attend!
PS. you better let Nettie come as she doesn't drink!!!!
We all need a taxi sometimes:D Plus she likes to keep her eye on me.
Quick bump and if you're okay with it Sharkey I'll edit your first post to include possible attendees and locations.
To be honest Dod I feel well out of my depth with this and the response. Would be pleased if you kinda took over as sorter-outer. I can help with logistics, ideas maybe but times, places to go and stay are bit beyond me. 'New Kid'.
I am picking Nettie up from Inverness on Monday so how about we pop round about 3:30pm for a chat and see the girl at the same time. Can you make that?
Whoops:- should 'see Misty'
I'll get onto it later Sharkey.
Doubt if I'll be there on Monday but Diane should be, I'll let you know :)
okay, posts updated, if anyone else is interested just post and I'll add you in. We'd better try to firm up on both a venue and a date though. Perhaps sort out the date first, any suggestions?
I'm definately up for it, given enough notice I should be able to arrange my work days to suit.

Thanks for that Dod.Nettie and I are definites no matter where the area is. Looks to me a Late August early September job as far as accommadation.
Right. Let's try to get this going.
Suggested dates: 18/19 August or 8/9 September. Who can make either of those?

It is looking I might be up in Scotland leading up to the 18th (aug) when I am supposed to be coming back, but will have to see if I could work out something :) would certainly save me a bit of a drive!
Interested if September. September would be good for me but the august dates aren't my missus is expecting on the 20th August :)
many many distilleries along with some old stuff.
Hmm, some of the distilleries do guided tours too, I'll call a couple of guys I know. HUN might be able to help there too?
They pretty well all do m8, next time I'm in one I'll enquire about costs etc.

So where are we going?????   etc..
Okay, just updated the responses and there seems to be a preference for September so can we finalise on that?
Location: there seems to be a majority from the Inverness area but given there's a fair chance the day will involve some moving about anyway that shouldn't be the deciding factor. Anyone got any preferences from the stuff already posted?
Looking at other meets what tends to be the most successful? Is it town meets? Country side? Sports? Never done this before so a bit of input would be appreciated.
If people could also confirm they can make September we can get the list finalised :)
Cheers folks :)
September if fine by me :) and i'm up for anything, whether town, village, up a mountain, in a stream, by a loch or at some sporty event :)
September is fine. Not really worried about where but if we had to choose it would be Glencoe area.

And, you don't have to travel far for good locations.
The Camp/caravan site on Loch Leven is excellent, open all year.

Could we not change the weekend?
That would mean accommodation would be less of a problem?
Although it would mean those that have booked , re-arranging , which could be a problem.
no reason why not, the original dates were just suggestions. Having said that if you don't give people something fixed to work with nothing tends to happen. What about the weekend after?
Hokey, cokey, not much more input.
My take on it is that it's never going to be possible to please or accomodate everyone in this type of activity, so on that basis let's stick to the September date we spoke about initially.
Looks like Glencoe is the preferred option so lets also do that. Les, I'd appreciate some input from you as you seem to know that area best. What sort of things are available to make it a good day/weekend out? Like Steep says what else apart from mountains :p
Some info on the area around Glencoe http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/areaglen/index.html
The scenery is stunning (the road to Kinlochleven is one of the nicest drives anywhere) but it does RAIN, long and often so some alternative plan is essential, as well as a meeting point on the day. For that I'd suggest the Visitor Centre near Glencoe village.

I provided a summary on some of the locations around Glencoe that I found interesting here:
http://www.lesmclean.co.uk/IP/Glencoe/Glencoe.pdf
Feel free to download.
A lot (as always) depends on the weather in Glencoe.
But there are a number of options.
The obvious ones are to visit the 'classics' , Buachaille Etive Mor , Rannoch Moor , Loch Etive, pap of Glencoe.
Another good area is the road down to Loch Etive (Glen Etive) and we spent a good day exploring Glen Etive last September on a day when the weather was poor. You have rapids, waterfalls, generally Kayakers, mountains, and almost always herds of deer that are relatively tame and near the roads.
Another option is to walk some of the trails, although few are easy hikes, for example the path up to the hidden valley is excellent and there are plenty of photo opportunities.
So if the weather is favourable, my option would be to capture the BEM and Rannoch Moor at sunrise, and then explore the Glen Etive road during the day ?
:thankyou: Thanks Les, that is very helpful. We're looking forward to the weekend regardless of the weather!
September Sunrise will be about 6:30am while Sunset 7:30-8pm
I will try and make Sept also if I'm not too late.
George
Will now confirm that I will be there, along with Sue who is a new member (and a relative of mine)
Is 8/9 now confirmed?

BTW, accomodation looks to be extremely tight, just a suggestion that we stay in Inverness, pro- more accomodation, could easily drive down to Glencoe or go to Glens Affric/Cannich, and the option of going East if the weather is crap in the west. Also might be able to get say a room in a hotel for a get together.
I might also be able to get a selection of Lee filter's products for people to have a look at, if anyone is interested.
George

Aye, sorry, 8th/9th is the date, Glencoe is the venue. It's a reasonable compromise in view of the members from the Northish of England who also expressed an interest. How many will actually attend though is anyone's guess :p
As far as accomodation etc is concerned that's got to be purely up to individuals. Unlikely I'll be staying over anywhere now, I'll just be doing an early Sunday morning, got something on the Saturday I can't get out of now :( .

Hello All
I'm the Sue (mentioned by George) who is joining this meet in Sept. I'm actually travelling up from Canterbury, in Kent. Am I the farthest traveller? (for this sort of thing) Am I setting a record? Hope the meet is good, otherwise I'll be disappointed. Seriously, any excuse to come up to (bonnie) Scotland is a bonus, and have not yet had the time to make the most of Glencoe's photo opportunities. Look forward to meeting all participants and trying out a new wide angle lens (which I haven't yet bought, still deciding, may post a thread?!).
Best regards Sue.:)

Are we any closer to a list/venue/Sat or Sun or both etc?
George
Steep suggested the Visitor Centre at Glencoe Village as a meeting point which sounds like a good idea. Suggestions welcome as to time. Sharkey and I are checking in on the Friday evening so anytime is OK with us. If weather permits I would like to try for a sunrise shot on either the Sat or Sun  but a bit later would probably be more suitable for meeting up?
OK, thanks, Nettie. Sue and I are staying at Crianlarich on the Sat eve, Are you in Ballachulish or Glencoe village? We'll prob drive up on Sat and, depending on the weather, make a tour of it as Sue won't know some of the areas.
Perhaps we could do a chain of mob nos by pm? Also visitor centre is a good idea, agree with the sunrise idea, but not sure of the best location. Poss along Loch Leven?
George
Sorry again, not been in this thread much the last few days :D
Visitor centre sounds good, as do mobiles by PM. Not sure who's all attending, there's definitely you four for Sat/Sun, I can do Sun, apart from that I don't know.
OK, I'll start the thread with a pm to you, Dod, and then you can send on to Sharkey.
Got you both and returned. Ta!
I'll drive down on one or both days, I too would like to try for a sunrise shot, shouldn't need to get up much before 04:00 ;)
OK folks, we (Dod, Nettie, Sharkey and myself) have been doing a bit of pm'ing to get this off the ground, and we are suggesting for those who can make it a bar lunch at the Clachaig inn http://www.clachaig.com/ at around 12.30 on Sat 8th Sept as a kick off for the event and a chance to set out a battle plan. Please add names and comments so we can perhaps get an idea of numbers.

BUMPITY BUMP BUMP!!!!!!:bonk::bonk:
It's getting close now and there are people out there who really did fancy this meet who have disappeared from view!:bat:
Some chat, some booze and 'maybe' the odd good photograph. Who knows what the meet might bring?:naughty::clap:
still confirming things need to sort out whether i'll be stayoing overnight or not!
Well, I'd make a hotel/b+b res asap, Scotland is filling up thanks to our fantastic weather, which sadly you can't see on Auntie Beeb!!:bonk::lol::lol:
Bumpety bump folks, I'm back :D
Well the 9th seems like a good day for me, i wont be able on the 8th as have other things cropped up, so an early start up on the Sunday morning looks a good idea :)
Seeing as it's more models / people i photograph, i'm not that big on taking landscapes, i might bring a friend to do some modelling for me :)

I haven't read the whole thread,(too lazy)
I have a couple of questions,
Has a definite date been confirmed ?
Has a venue been decided upon ?
I'm due a few days holiday and would love to join you.

Thread title sorted ;) Some are managing one day, others both :)
Dod, I think someone, perhaps ahem you??:lol:could draw up a list of people and venue, and put it on another thread, as this one really is a bit tortuous as has been pointed out!!
I 'll do it if necessary but a summary would I think be worthwhile.....

tut tut all the way to Glencoe & your not going to climb up it ????? its a nice wee hill should only take about 1-2 hours to get to top. The view from to is magnificent. Glad i did it when i was younger lol
Perhaps as I'm no longer 'younger' i will probably decline thank you.
Oh forgot, 'overweight and totally unfit'. Yup those are good reasons.
Right, I 'm going to take the ferret bu the horns and open a new thread, to summarise how I see it .
Please read if you are interested and comment as this thread is too long for anyone to be arsed reading it so there!!
Suggest the powers that be close this one now.
George
Of course the expression is take the ferret by the horns.
