If it was the other way up?

It doesn't have the impact of your previous shot, alas, looks quite washed out towards the bottom too.

I don't think the artefacts from jpeg compression are helping your cause either.

I think the background would be fine if there was more colour in the focal point of the shot and the graduation appeared more continous.

thanks Ghandi - I know where you're coming from - I'm just experimenting really - seeing what works and what doesn't. I appreciate your comments. what about this one????:D

I think with backgrounds you have to decide if you want a complimentary colour or the other other kind (contrasting/opposing?)

Have a look at a colour wheel (good explanation here (http://www.colormatters.com/colortheory.html)) and decide what sort of effect you want......

I like black as a background, especially with backlighting as it can be lost on a lighter one sometimes. Bit '80s I know, but that was when I grew up. Darker subjects need a lighter b/ground I guess :shrug:

I like the darker background - makes it seem more vibrant :)
