Thought I'd dip my toe in this section and ask for comments on these two. The bottom picture is cropped more than the first but they are different shots, even if he hadn't moved much between them. :)

Both handheld with the D2x and Sigma 300/2.8

The most obvious issue on the first one is the focus is off. You have really nice sharp bark but his eyes (the most important part) are oof. The second is nice and I like the space to the left but I think it could use a little more USM.

Both looking a mite soft, but I'm sure both will sharpen up appreciably.

Good captures though. :)

I have had a play with more USM, I've not really played with sharpening much before so bit of a learning excersize here...

Sorry to post an edit again.

Select Magnetic Selection Tool
Go around the head/part you want to sharpen
Go to select>modify>smooth (3pxl's on this small image)>ok
Go to select>modify>feather> (1pxl's on this small image)
Got to Filter>Sharpen>Unmask Sharp>Approx 45%>ok

Done.

Only slight increase in sharpness but a noticeable amount.

I don't really see a big difference there Pete tbh.

I've given it a real good sharpen. Unfortunately sharpening also makes the slight image noise more prominent too so I've just used noise reduction on the background (where it's always most noticeable). Also adjusted the levels and colour balance a bit. Hope you like it. :)

Mods hat on now - your images are over the forum limit of 800 pixels on the longest side! :suspect:

Sorry they're too big, should have read the rules more thoroughly.

One question though, what settings did you use for that image you did? I'm trying to figure out how to acheive the same thing on the original :)
