I finally bit the bullet last week and ordered my 70-200mm f/2.8 VR which arrived today. This is the first shot taken just to see what is possible with a VR lens as I've never used one before. Hand held, 200mm at 1/30th:

Joe,

Would you get the 70-200 f/2.8 VR considering the coverage of the 120-300 f/2.8. Obviously the VR is quality, the weight is halfed & and extra 50mm but wouldn't something like the 28-70 f/2.8 AF-S be very useful.

I'm looking at both these options as a short fast lens is being considered at the moment.

Ta,

Adam.

I'm guessing this lens is comparable with the lightsider version which is stunning...

Oh yes you will like this lens

Oh yes you will! Used mine for the first time on saturday at a wedding indoors, rain was not getting on my new lens, and it was awesome. Used wireless flash as well and then stood back :)

Ta,

I agree with what you are saying about overlap with the 120-300 2.8. Arguably the most useful lens to cover the gap between the 18-70 and 120-300 2.8 is the Sigma 50-150 2.8 which retails for a reasonable £450.

However, the reason why I believe the 70-200 VR is suitable for me is that it gives me a handholdable telephoto lens. It is not too heavy to carry, and has VR to combat handshake. It's also one of Nikon's best lenses! :D

The 28-70 is a great lens, but on a digital camera it needs to be paired with the 12-24 (or similar). Total cost = quite a lot!

Im fairly happy with my 18-70 for now, but if I did replace it I would probably chose the 17-55. Of course if Nikon come out with a full frame body soon, then I might go the 28-70 option!
