Sorry to far for me. Have a good day, I'm sure there's a few Welsh members who'd like to meet up.
cheers for the link jimmy i know where it is .. did not think..lol
cheers
Well worth doing, but try and pick a nice day if you can. Blue skies make all the difference. You really need 500mm or more to fill the frame but you can do OK with a 400mm.
good advice ct ill be using my 300mm with a 1.4 converter 420mm ish
would be great if you and jan could make it :naughty:
i could pick your brains :naughty: only kidding i know you went the other year but i missed that one ..
Well we might do it depending on the date and the weather. Can't promise though. It was crappy light last year - grey skies all round.
The biggest problem with Gigrin is the viewing slots in the hides don't let you get enough height to get on the birds when they're closest and nearly overhead.. constantly fouling the top of the window with the lens.
If I could work outside the hide with a tripod and the 500mm I'd be there like a shot, but it would be frowned on I'm sure. The daft part is the birds wouldn't be in the least bothered, but with the numbers of visitors and togs you can see why they have the rule.
depending upon the date i maybe able to make this one
when i went a few months ago you could view the birds from an area above them,if that makes sense. Not in a hide and you do need a decent lens, but the backdrop is better.
i'll be up for that monkey boy
i'll be up for that monkey boy
Me too :) dependant on dates and weather of course :)
 cool thats a possible 6/7 at the moment i will check out the weather situation but at the moment im thinking about aug 12th 19th hope that sound ok to most .. ill go with the flow.....:naughty:
I cant do the 12th but 19th will be good.
19th sounds like the one .at the moment i have at least 3 that can not make the 12th. also gives the weather a chance to change

i will see what i can do mate :naughty: ill be in touch :suspect:
ok then folks its the 19th for this venture..
hope the weather is ok , if not there will still be three or four of us there for sure.. if anyone else fancies coming but is shy  "lol shy on here"
then just turn up ill be the one looking around like ive not a clue..
a few of us wil be poping up to the dams in the morning anyone who fancies this give me a shout the more the merrier...
speak to you all soon ill be bumping this thread regular...:naughty:
ill definitely be there on the 19th, ill be the daft one waving a lens about and swearing a lot cos i missed that perfect shot AGAIN ;) lol

ha ha you just described me ..lol if you fancie going up and doing some more shots mate give me a bell . we are going up early then having a pub lunch...
that goes for anyone else as well
If I had the lens, the money, and the time, I'd be up for this. Sadly I definately dont have the first, probably don't have the second, and more than likely dont have the third.

Good idea. Well we know from the last time that the birds couldn't care less about you standing outside. ;)
hmmmmm http://www.gigrin.co.uk/hide.html this looks promising :)
hmmmmm http://www.gigrin.co.uk/hide.html this looks promising :)
thats the reason for the reccy mate .... heard they had a tower going up and possible shoots outside the hides
costs alittle more but for someone who knows what they want its worth it i think:shrug:
as said ill be in touch
unless someone fancies the reccy...

my math is cr@p is that about 400mm
if so then i suspect you " as me will have to crop your shots"
dont tell the big boys
but they should be ok and handle the crop:gag:

You'll be fine. This is a full frame shot with the 1DMK2n and 100-400L at 400mm. This was taken just about as close as they get - virtually overhead. A lot of the shots will fill the frame less but you can still crop and fill the frame.

420mm. :)
It's a sight to behold - there are so many birds in the air you don't know which to go for and their flight patterns are quite erratic. You just have to pick one out and stick with it tracking it in the viewfinder - let the servo AF do it's thing till they're close enough to take the shot.
Aw! I missed this thread last week as I was in Cardiff. Rhayader is only half an from where I live. I have never done this kind of photography before. I would like to join up with you, but not sure if I have a decent enough lens in my kit. Is it worth me meeting up with you then? On the 19th? CT and the other pros, check out my stuff and tell me if any of it is capable. I suppose I could use the 20D and put on the 100mm macro 2.8 - or the crappy 75-300mm.
Gillian
I could do the dams and the landscapes. Maybe, I could borrow one of yours for a couple of shots... ......CT's pretty please?:)
I'm going to try to arrange transport to this - if anyone is travelling down from near Liverpool, Chester or Manchester & fancies a bit of company & petrol money then It'd stop me hitchhiking

You could happily borrow one of my lenses Gilly, but I can't categorically say I'll be going yet. Your 70-300 sounds the best bet at the long end.
Fairy snuff. I will put it in my diary now. It'll be like going on a school trip...
ill have the 100-400 with me so you can always borrow that Gilly as ill have the 600 attached most of the day if i can get into one of the decent hides :) or be outside.
Count me in dave

It had to go as I had to change the direction of my photography and buy other kit, as more money was coming in from other things, and thats what pays the bills.
Don't tell me you sold it..
YEP to MEEEEEE :) hehehehehehe

LOL Definitely leave the converter off Ian - 600mm is plenty and you'll AF much quicker.
