What are my options for a lens in the range from between 18mm to say 70 to 135mm

Ideally after f2.8 or f4

Well you've got:

AF-S 18-70 - £180

AF-S 18-135 - £250 (I think)

Af-S 18-200 VR - £400?

17-55 2.8 - £800

Sigma 50-150 2.8 - £450 - could be used with one of the above

Sigma 17-70 - not sure on this one, but peeps on here like it

Tamron 17-50 2.8 - supposed to be very good

Tamron 28-75 2.8 - again supposed to be very good.

Then you have the priimes:

Sigma 30mm 1.4
Nikon 35mm f2
Nikon 50mm 1.8 - like you already have
Nikon 50mm 1.4 - faster, better built version of 1.8 above
Nikon 85mm 1.8 - also a 1.4 version available, but its pricey.

so maybe the tamron 28-75 i think might fill the focal range best maybe and the price seems achievable for me so that may be the one to aim for i think. Thanks for your help as always both of you.

2 of the best lenses in that focal range haven't even been mentioned :o

AF-S 28-70 f/2.8 (one of the best lens nikon produce)
and last but not least the sigma 24-70 f/2.8

must admit i had heard that the tamron seems to be marginally better than the 24-70 and i don't have a grand for a 28-70! lol

The 28-70 can be had for £700-£750 new and i've seen some examples go for 600-700 2nd hand.
