Hi Guys,
I am new to photography and got a Canon EOS400d 18-55mm kit. I normally use it to take potraits, family pictures, that kind of thing. I have also bought the famous 50mm Canon lens which I think is brilliant for close ups. Could you recommend a similar lens to the 50mm that will also have zoom?

It would help to know what type of things you intend to shoot and your budget, When you say a lens similar to the 50mm do you mean image quality ?
How are you finding the 18-55 kit lens?
It isnt as bad as some folk make out, but, when I had a 20d I replaced mine with a EFS17-85IS (£350), the 17-85 is IMO a much better lens than the kit.
My next step was the EF24-70Lf2.8 (£650) which is a thing of beauty, its an amazingly sharp lens and the f2.8 can really help with portraits, but it costs quite a bit.
The 18-55f2.8IS is apparantly a very good lense, and the EF24-105IS is also highly rated.
To give any proper advice we will really need to know your budget. :)

I have a budget of about £200, and I would like a similar image quality to the 50mm lens, sharp and clear pictures even in low lighted conditions. I must confess that I don't know that much about photography and normally just take pics with auto settings :(
I normally use it to take pictures of my family.
In your case, I'd second the 17-85IS.
Check the classifeds here, you'll see there are some for sale ;)
Cheers,
James
