View Full Version : Canon offers locking mode dial upgrade for 5D Mark II, 7D
Canon in Japan has announced a service upgrade for the EOS 5D Mark II and EOS 7D that sees the camera's mode dial replaced with a redesigned locking version. The new dial, which is similar in design to the one on the EOS 60D, includes a centre button that, when pressed, allows the dial setting to be changed. Otherwise, the dial is locked in position to prevent accidentally changing the mode setting while the camera is carried.http://www.robgalbraith.com/imgs/blank.gifhttp://www.robgalbraith.com/imgs/blank.gifhttp://www.robgalbraith.com/imgs/blank.gifhttp://www.talkphotography.co.uk/data/1/rec_imgs/1646_noise_ninja_728x90v2.gif (http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/ad_link.asp?ads_id=37)http://www.robgalbraith.com/imgs/blank.gifhttp://www.robgalbraith.com/imgs/blank.gifhttp://www.robgalbraith.com/imgs/blank.gif

Hmm. Well that's something which is now becoming common on the windage and elevation turrets of rifle scopes. (Some types have the turrets under caps, others have them "out in the open" for easy adjustment shot to shot.)
So, it's an extra feature but actually how many suffer the problem of the mode dial being nudged round unintentionally? Which of us when bringing the camera up to the eye doesn't look at the dial at least subliminally?
What other "really useful" features would we welcome?
I'd like a "You've got enough spare cash to buy another MF lens" warning in the viewfinder and a "Buy some chocolate" flasher on the back display panel.

How nice of canon to offer us an upgrade which is totally unecessary for only £80. Accidently move the dial! What the heck would you have to be doing to accidently move the dial? This is exactly what used to be standard on the old eos film bodies and it was a damned nuisance to operate. Your paying £80 (or whatever they charge, it's $125) to make your camera more awkward to use.
Actually, I find that I often nudge the wheel on my 7D, but I've got into the habit of checking it now.

Seems like a good upgrade, was a gripe i had with the 40d, dial always got moved going in and of the bag or even around the shoulder with longer lenses on.
Hated the 1d button and dial to change modes initially, now its awesome. No phantom mode changes :D
Ive come across this problem too... with some of the guy's that we use swapping cameras over quickly for event use, that sometimes they can nudge the wheel one or two clicks... and because they are in a hurry to get the next shot, take one or two pics before they notice...
ok its only 1 or 2 shots, but i bet thy are the ones we'd sell if they were good!! sod's law isnt it!! lol
Isn't that why the on switch has two positions - one of which disables the rear wheel ?
Its an upgrade for the mode dial on top... not the wheel on the back...
Arrrr - I've only ever nudged the wheel on the back, but considering how often the top wheel gets changed when I'm in the studio (hardly ever) it would be nice to know it won't get knocked away from whatever C setting I'm on.
Happens to me a lot on the 5D! Although not sure I'd send the camera back for the upgrade?
Always knocking the B thing, May give it some thought when its available in Britian

You don't use a 7D much then do you? It frequently gets nudged to a different mode.

To offer it they must realise the original design had flaws, this flaw maybe more important to some users than others but can't help feeling it's a bit cheeky after shelling out over a grand.

OK an addendum to my OP, I just looked at my 450D and its almost impossible to nudge it, then I checked my 50D and yeah, ok it is much more exposed as its on the left. However it is a fairly stiff click and I dont remember any occasion when I nudged it off but yes I can see how the xxD and xD series could be moved if they were squeezed in and out of a tight bag. In general use Mmm.. juries out on that one but fair comment for those who have the issue.
I agree with Xooxanthelle though its a bit of a cheeky upgrade on the really high end bodies.:shake:

Great news ! it is a problem when shooting with two bodies...especially at wedding type jobs where sometimes only a split second is available to capture the moment...Only to find the mode switch has nudged round to Bulb....Doh! !
I do check now...I have learnt from my own personal experiences !
Funnily enough my old file Eos 5 has that feature already. The generally much hated double button operation on my 1DMk2 has no dial to "accidentally" rotate, progress eh?
