This was my entry for last months TPPOTY comp, RED. It didn't do so well, so I thought I'd put it, and two others I nearly chose for some feedback.

I didn't pick this because I though it was likely to be done by others... it was.

And this was my third choice.

I liked your entry and i think it may have been my 2nd or 3rd choice.

Dont be disheartened - you may not have appealed to the majority of voters, but this is a subjective mistress and another audience may have voted completely differently

I much prefer it to your other two shots for its orginality. The telegraph wires are the only distraction that a little cloning would resolve if you were so inclined. Just something to consider when you frame your shots in the future ;)

I tried cloning out the wires but in the end preferred them in. My son agrees with you though, sometimes parents just don't listen. :baby:

Yeah lose the wires. Other than that not at all bad

Ok see if you prefer it like this. I don't think I do.

I like this, especially without the wires, lovely bold shape & colour.
I would have preferred to see a little more of the bottom hands/arms extending up into the shot though.

Really love the Poppy one!

A lesson Ive learned the hard way is just do what you feel with comps.
I used to live by the rule that if it was my first thoughts, then it would be everyone elses first thoughts too.
... Now I realise everyone else works by that rule too!

Yes so would I. Unfortunately their arms are too short, any more and you get the heads which I really wanted to avoid. In fact my first efforts at this had no arms at all, but the results looked a little like I'd photographed a normal pencil sitting on a pic of a blue sky, instead of a 12ft specimen.

Have I missed the full results box? I've been looking out for it.

I liked your pencil shot it was a bit different. It probably does look a bit better without the wires but they didn't interfere that much in the image for me anyway.

Out of the three the poppies is my favourite, its the one I would be most likely to hang on my wall.

I really do like this shot, and I almost voted for it, but the wires just put it in 4th for me :( Really interesting shot though :) Whats the story behind it? Where do you find a huge red pencil?

Also interested in the story behind the pencil shot. I like the rasberry pic, the green background does somthin for me also the DOF i like!

It is actually a school crossing point, there's a yellow one on the other side of the road, but unfortunately is right next to a lamp post. I'll find a context pic later and post it so you can see.

Thanks all for your feedback.

Personally, I don't really like two and three. The selective colouring just misses the mark for me and the other bits of red act as a distraction. The raspberries also don't really do it for me..... Sorry. The stacking is not quite random but not quite organsied either. The green feels to opposed to the red and lighting leaves the shadows and highlights grouped too close together rather than balanced.

BUT....... as you've seen, plenty of people see this all the other way around and one bods poison is another bods nectar and all that. I would have kept to the old "if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all". But since we're in the in depth section.......

The pencil shot is brilliant though. The hands tucked into the bottom corner is perfect, you have to look a little to see them and then the whole shot just come together beautifully. I was convinced that I liked the wires just how they were but since seeing the version with out, I'm not sure. Great either way though.
