If it wasnt for the red blob, the railings, the weird concrete walls,...

Almost has an interesting sky, not enough detail ***.

The water in this shot is really nice and smooth without having too long a shutter speed to totally lose deffinition. Its just a pitty the sky wasnt playing ball so you could of gotten some nice blue in there.

Thanks for that. There was no sky detail but in response I have changed the photograph to an image. Could have added a nice bright blue bit as well but that was just a bit too much. Took the 'red blob' out though.

Just as a matter of opinion , how much of a photogreph should I change in PS to make it acceptable?

Looks better without the blob.

Good water effect *** (didnt state that in the first post).

Shame about the lack luster clouds ***

As to how much you "shop" a shot depends on the purist in you.

The purist in me says show what you saw. But. I do PS in the same way I used a derkroom. My question was.'How much PS alteration must I make to make any image acceptable'?

Can I only photograph the spectacular sunset, the outrageous building with spectacular sunset, thefireworks on the edge of spectacular sunset, the absolutely beautiful, the incredible, the out of this world sunrise with a humorous content.

Or is it possible to photograph the real beauty of what is around me and have it accepted as a good (not great), just goodish even capture.

Perhaps I should send all my stuff to my mate ( a PS pro ) so that hecan sort the whole lot out. Dunnooooo!

Oh well back to taking photographs..

Removing the red blob guides you into the water much better.

I like the original, even with the red bit, just that splash of colour makes it. the only photoshoping I would have done woulf be to pull the sky down a bit so its more steel grey like the water....like this...

http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/gallery/data/1002/B1O0023edit.jpg

There isnt much you can do when the skies are overcast other than make the most of them and I am impressed how you have managed not to get blown skies using longer shutter speeds - tiny apertures or filters?

I will try and understand that:thinking:  I do feel that unless its really bright on your monitor that it doesnt honestly make a lot of difference.

I have a B&W version and full size its not too bad. The colour for me asks what am I? Maybe makes you think a bit about what you are seeing, Dunnooo. Maybe too musch thinking went in to it!

Tiny aperture & 50asa.
Did the sky thing in my second version with blob greyed out. Used selective exposure reduction for the sky and a little desat. Was that what you meant.

Not even that complicated, just selected it with lasso tool, and a 40pix feather [for that size image] and pulled the levels down a tad to make it a bit darker and keep the detail of the whispy bits at the bottom of the cloud and the contrast.... its such a good shot I dont think it needs too much playing with.

Like everything, its subjective, some will like it more in colour as it is, some with the colour gone, but ultimately you have got yourself a good image, so choice is yours for the final cut as it were, and the nice thing a bout digital is you can have more than one version! :D

You can't go inviting comments and then get upset when people make them.

My take is that the water is really the strength of the shot but you haven't made enough of it, the water coming down the chute draws you in to the image nicely but it's off balanced by the concrete and railings and red gear thingy.

I have a phylosophical approach to all this. When I comment I do my damndest to be polite, constructive and to treat the photograph with the respect I think other peoples work deserves.

For example I like very much Les McCleans work and have said so, but when I saw a couple of his recently that didn't IMO reflect his best I 'tried' to say so in an encouraging way. In no way was my language dismissive or deroggatory. I would apologies if it had been taken that way.

One of the very points of the photograph was the counterpoint between the hard edged machinery/framworks at the top and the flowing confusion of water/grass and sky.

That carefully framed image from a clear idea recieved the'red blob' response.

How am I supposed to take it.

Maybe the grey is better and the sky more interesting in the second attempts but that can be put across in a far more reasoned manner, more acceptable to most, I would have thought. Maybe.

It is very easy on the web to slip into jargon, shortcut, and wordbites. Problem is your face is not visible and your jest, lightheartd jap etc. can and are easily offensive.

Plus & finally, those who live by the sword, die by it. So in an attempt not to commit suicide by TP I will continue to be as polite/positve and careful as I can in dealing with others efforts and fight my corner when mine is not treated similary.

Fair? I hope so.

When you ask for c&c on here you need to take the good with the bad.

You were unlucky to get oldgit's remarks first because he can sometimes come accross as blunt and direct.

No fancy words .... Just tells it like he see's it .... :D

I think we've all been annoyed by oldgits comments at one time or another :p I can honestly say i've never been able to disagree with him before though.

I would say thats quite fair and quite right too.

It's one thing to point out errors and negatives in someones work, but it must be done with tact, diplomacy and with a helpful tone. There's a difference between being "to the point" and rude. :)

We all welcome criticism, I know I do, but it only takes a minute to reword a harsh post into a criticisng but helpful one.

I see that the first post it didn't read well, but since Sharkey had answered it didnt seem fair to change it.

Hoped to have corrected that in the 2nd post.

Sharkey -I have just re-read all of the posts on this thread and now feel terrible. I didn't know there was a negative comment on another thread, if I had, then I certainly wouldn't have made the comments above at lunchtime. That will teach me to read and understand what is being said before posting a comment about an image. :rules:

I do hope you didn't take offence at what I said. If you did, then I am truly sorry. :'( It was meant in a very, very lighthearted way to cheer everyone up on a Monday and possibly bring a smile to fellow peeps.:)

I always take care not to offend any one by giving negative critique.

Actually, the second image you posted has got extra punch and gives an almost 'painted' look. I prefer the Red coloured building in this picture as it adds more colour. The gold tone of the water makes you think it is a rush of flood water. I take my hat off to you for giving your image a bit of a boost and re-posting it.

Absolutely NO offence taken dear lady.

Your comments where funny, pertinent and in good spirits.

As I said to photomad, its not the critique its the method/style which offends.

Any way all sorted now.

I try and take a good look at my stuff when it is criticised as I know it is not the most modern of picture making styles.

I am not that old but I must say I am finding it diffecult to see how some (a lot  ) of the techniques used are an improvement. Even the way pictures are viewed seems a little strange to me.

The cinema affect, the advert affect, even the digital reportage affect have all played a part in moving the 'image' on.

Whoops off I go!
:cuckoo:
