Here are my first attempts at this type of photography. It is the same sunset at slightly different times. I was using the 18-200 and tripod. I had to shoot quite quickly as the sun seemed to go down very quickly. Any pointers would be appreciated. They are in order.

all good photo's. I like number 2 the best, thinks it the way the sun shines on the water

Thanks Shorey,

I will take the grass out and have a look. I was aware it was in shot when I took it though. Glad you liked it.

All good sunsets. But you need some focal point, A strong silloette in the forground, even a tree.

Like them all a lot!

Remember that photos are primarily a way for you to record memories and experiences of events and places.

IMHO rules of composition should always be secondary to this.

#1
I would have preferred to see a little less sky and more foreground (horizon on bottom 1/3 line)

#2
Must agree with others - a little bit dark - but I still like it! - the grass bottom right a bit distracting...

#3
Also very nice but horizon neither on 1/3s or halfway - again grass bottom right distracting.

The reflection is not pretty enough to warrant a halfway horizon and foreground not quite pretty enough to show 2/3s of.

Bottom line is - whether "technically correct" or not they are your memories.

If, of course, they are beautiful and technically correct it is first prize and you could even possibly sell them!

HTH!

The first thing that strikes me is the fact that the sun is centralised in all of the shots. Try a crop with it to one side a bit more. They are wonderful colours.......... but as suggested........it seems enough at the time to take a photo of a sunset but they can turn out needing a focal point of some type.

Very well done though,,, keep em coming! ;)

No 2 would be a huge improvement if it was in potrait not landscape.

Nice photos. Where did you shoot them?

OK Guys,
Here we go...... The shots are landscape because I think this is the only way to shoot a "landscape" like this. The shots are centralised on the sun as this is the focal point of the composition in my opinion. I did try to apply the rule of 1/3s but my understanding may be lacking somewhat.:nono:
For me, No.1 is best and No.3 is second, followed by the "dark one" but, I am open to criticism and correction to right anything that I may be "off" on.
Thanks Anton for the comments, I will try to cut the grass but it was put in as a foreground intentionally, however, if it is distracting or whatever I will remove it and see what it looks like.
In any event.... Please keep the C&C coming, otherwise, how else can I learn.
The shots were taken from just North of Greyabbey on Strangford Lough, looking toward Scrabo Tower.

Thanks for all your comments.
David.
