As the Dragon flies were giving me the run around today, I went for the much more obliging damsel flies instead.

Great shots but a bit to tight of a crop for me.
Both very good.
Just HOW close do you have to get with a 150mm macro to get these shots?
... and how do the beasties not fly away?

I quite like the crop on 1, but agree about it being too tight on 2. Unfortunately the tightness at the back was how the shot was framed, so I tried to balance it out a bit at the front. I promise i'll do better next time.

Probably about 40-50cm from the front element. And I get this close by moving slowly and quietly. Make sure you move as close to the ground as possible, ideally lower than the eyeline of the insect. Also make sure you don't cast a shadow on them, and with some insects make sure you don't breath on them (Some species use carbon dioxide to detect other creatures).

Where did you get so clever?
Thanks by the way  ... I learned things today:D

Hehe, no problem. I think being brought up by Nature and wildlife loving mountaineers probably helped. And an eternal thirst for random knowledge doesn't do any harm either.
Excellent again MK... you really should put together a publication you know. I'm sure it would fly off the shelves
Again, nice shots but they need a little more space around them.

Love the first one, I think the background really helps bring out the colours. They just don't seem as vivid in the 2nd.
I too think they need a bit more space, but other than that they're brilliant as usual MK :D
