View Full Version : POTY 2010 - Round 12 - OPEN (Voting)

Jimmy_Lemon
04-01-2011, 21:26
This is multiple choice, so you may vote for as many or as few images that you like, but they have to chosen in one go, you CANNOT come back and vote for more at a later date.

Take a look through the entries (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=278191) and note the post number of the images you like (top right of each post....you'll notice a #1 above this post for example).

Please do NOT vote for the entries marked VOID.

This poll will close in 7 days.

Thanks :)

Well - my votes are in, well done to everyone who managed to enter this month, I never find it easy in December, what with the poor weather and all the other stuff going off, so big respect to anyone who got out there shooting specifically for this competition.

Got mine in too and hoping for a not too shabby finish in the rankings. Only managed six entries this year so am resolved to nail all 12 next year. Huge thanks for organising and running this, it has been fun getting out there and shooting new stuff and for personal endeavour as well.

Well - on your current score, there are 9 people you'll be passing overall (i.e. they haven't entered this month and are less than 11 in front of you ) and theres plenty of time left yet.

I'm just sat biting my nails and waiting to get knocked out of the top 10 for the rest of this week! It's not helping me think up ideas for Jan-2011's POTY, I can tell you

True - that's my main ambition for this years POTY - well - that and getting into the top 25 at the year end... Though the way that jpw's racking up the votes, we could both be taking a step down the ladder

I agree. Ryan, your shot is the kind of landscape that I covert! A stunning shot so no need to feel faint.

In fact there were so many stunning shots this month I went into voting overload!

Well that's my votes in for last years final round. I picked 12 this time, quite a good quality of entries.

Thank you Tom for making the voting and the comp much more accessible to the rest of the forum, I see it's even coming up on "New Posts" now, it pays to badger then ;) I hope this is going to be the normal exposure for the coming year, it deserves no less :)

Thank you also to those that voted for my effort :)

Interesting to see that I was the only one from the birding section to enter, loads from landscape I see ;)

I will not lose any aswell, but for someone that's only entered once this year and is such an active poster I wouldn't have expected them to put other peoples effort down in something I think is fun and gets members of the forum to join in on something.

I don't see why Tom, surely the more people that are aware of the comp, the more entries it's likely to get, and more interest shown in another facet for people to improve their photography. Let alone opening up the voting to a wider interest group. Notice how many landscapes we got this time ?

I can only see it as a good thing. Very sorry if it's a pain in the arse.

It is more the fact that people will stop reading it. If there is always a notice up at the top of the page people will just start ignoring it. The same happens with Sticky threads, people just end up skipping them and instead they end up being less viewed than a regular thread.

Ah yes that makes sense. Anything has to be better than how it was though, a tiny subsection only found if you new exactly where it was. It's a tad better now.

I'm sure it's not the Photographer of the Year just for that small percentage that stumbled across the thread, it does need advertising more.

The fact that it is now appearing in "Todays Posts" must help though. That's how I found it a few years ago after seeing it appear a few times, and if my memory serves me well, there were many more entrants then than there are now.
Prior to this month, it has'nt been appearing in there for a while to my knowledge.

Even if not everyone that looks in enters, to have a wider variety of voters and interest can only be good for the thread.

Well I remember in 1901 when we couldn't move in here for poty entries ramble ramble..........

only a small part, and possibly not too accurate at that, of the continued "rant" Mark. The most important part being to get as much publicity for the POTY as possible, opening it up to the rest of the forum rather than being something hidden away only entered by "those in the know"

Looks like I'm the only one going on about it though, despite the obvious effects that the new publicity has had ;)

Also each time I post the thread appears again in "Todays Posts" for more publicity :)

It's certainly going to be interesting if the 2011 POTY gets this sort of voting numbers all year - what with that and voting for your own shot being banned (though I don't know how they'll enforce that one - I think that's got to be an awful lot of trawling through log files for some poor benighted soul!) it's certainly going to be impossible to compare scores year on year to see if you've improved

I agree about the new rules, but it seems to have been you and me that's been banging on about people voting for themselves, did'nt make many friends there then  and people using old photos to enter the competition. I've seen some that were'nt even in the same year :cuckoo:

I felt guilty for having one that was a fortnight early let alone months out, and had to change it. Little point in having a monthly entry in that case, just stick 12 piccys from your archives on and open the voting would have worked as well.

I've allways banged on about people praising each other up in the discussion thread, to a degree that's stopped now, but there's still indications of chronyism, which a more open voting system will negate, I hope.

It's only meant to be a bit off fun, and to be totally honest I rarely have any idea what the "Prize" is, It's of no interest. The point of taking part is to improve your photographic skills. Voting for yourself, using old photos voting for your mates etc is completly contrary to that ethos.

The amount of people that join in, and the amount that vote depends on how well it's brought to the notice of the forum as a whole. Lets hope the new interest contiues.

Hey - I've already got myself the reputation of the EXIF Nazi in the 2011 thread - I'm going to be lucky if I draw even the one vote in 2011

That's fine for those that have a archive of shots. Anything half decent I've taken in the 2 years i've been a member here has been posted up on here somewhere already. If I did drag out a old shot (which I confess - the tilt/shift one was, but re-processed for the comp.) by defintion, it's going to be second rate!

I've allways banged on about people praising each other up in the discussion thread, to a degree that's stopped now, but there's still indications of chronyism, which a more open voting system will negate, I hope.

Thing is - no matter what, you'll get people voting for their "friends and family" - even a full blind system, with shots submitted by email, vetted prior to posting and hosted on a single server isn't immune to it - people can always pick up the phone and say "mine's number 14, fred's is 17, and bert's is 39". Sadly, human nature is such that some people will do this:thumbsdown:

 agreed - but there are always some that will go for the win at all costs approach.

Well a Fantastic effort been put in by all this year, both the members that have entered and the members that have voted and its been great to see so many voters this month.

I have enjoyed seeing all the different photos that have been shown this year and it doesnt matter what votes we got each month i think we are all winners every month for get out there and trying to enter to improve our skills. I know that since i have been a member here on TP the members either through this monthly competition or when we have met up at meets you have help me improve no end and i would like to Thank You all for driving me on.

Congratulations to everyone that managed to enter the competition, either one month or all of them... 447 people entered one or more months, and 12 people actually managed all of them

If anyone's interested, theres the PROVISIONAL results for the month (http://www.mb-software.co.uk/tp/POTY_12-2010.htm) and YTD (http://www.mb-software.co.uk/tp/POTY_YTD-2010.htm) now posted. Wow Mark, thanks for all your extra work showing the breakdown by months entered, makes very interesting reading :)

Well - I thought it would be nice for the people that came in late and only entered the last couple or three comp's to see how they fared against their peers. It did make interesting reading though - and a good way to see the up-and-coming people for next year

Well done on your 7 place you must be pleased.

Pleased doesn't BEGIN to cover how I'm feeling - I didn't think I was competitive about all this, but I've been sat chewing my fingernails to the knuckles for the last 3 days as various people racked up huge votes and got nearer and nearer to my aggregate score. At the start of the year, I decided I was going to try for 100 votes and a top 20 placing - based on the prior years figures that was maybe a 20% improvement, which I reckoned was just about do-able. In the end I moved from 21st @ 81 votes (6.55%) up to a provisional 7th @ 108 votes (7.80% of the vote) which was far better than I could have hoped for!.

Thanks to all those that voted for me throughout the year  and congrats to the winners :)

I'd like to echo that, and add that everyone who entered the comp. this year is a winner in my book! We've all had the fun of shooting, of learning new techniques, and of examining everyone else's interpretation of the brief. I'd like to think that we've all taken something from this competition, I certainly know I have

Now - here's to the 2011 POTY !
