I found that a Sto-fen diffuser really helps!

Manual - 1/125 and F8 is a good place to start with Flash

Your plan is good. When I use flash I generally use manual mode and set Aperture, Shutter and ISO according to how much ambient light I want to capture. Then ETTL will usually do the rest.

Usually. This is where practise comes in. lots. It really is like learning something new - learning what you have to ad positive comp to and what to have neg comp for. I often use bounce flash as well but depends on the ceiling/wall colour.

I got myself new pressies as a 3month anniversary of ever owning a camera:) , Canon 24-70 2.8 and the 580EX II. But i feel ive reseted back to absolute beginner, as i dont know how to make flash work properly.

Ive read up and tried few settings but cant get much consistant results, Say if i wanted to take pictures when it starts getting dark outside of people, i set camera to manual, set aperture 2.8, and set a shutter speed faster the focal length?, the shutter speed indicator flashes underexposed, but the flash unit should fill in rest of flash to compensate? the mode is in ETTL.

I would love to work out using flash, please help:P
