View Full Version : POTY 2011 Round 2 - Sooooo Cold! (Discussion)
Welcome to the 2011 Talk|Photography Photographer Of The Year Competition.
Sponsored By: Vision Graphix
http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/images/externallogos/banners/vision_graphix_460x68.gif (http://www.visiongraphix.co.uk)
Vision Graphix will provide a print of the winning image for the winner each month
This year, the themes are designed to make you think, to encourage the imagination.
The deadline for entries is the 11:59pm on the last day of the month, shortly after that a POLL will be made for you to vote for you favourite entries that month. This process will then repeat each month with a leader board being published after each round. The winner of each month will receive a prize (this will be announced each month). The member with the most votes at the end of the year will win the coveted TP POTY Trophy.
So on with the competition;
The theme for February is:
'SOOOOO COLD!'
Supposedly the coldest month of the year, make us shiver and reach for those hats and scarves!

Sorry Fabs i was under the impression the announcement was to give us time to think about it but couldn't take the image until the 1st of the month.
I wish i had understood better could have got an image this weekend just gone for round two. :bang:
It's more about making sure that people take photos FOR the competition rather than within the month itself.

Whoo-hoo, -27c finally has a use  Must keep the camera safe though!
Thought of a great concept spent ages preparing the props only to find that my lack of experience has let me down not at all happy with the final results, but will keep it as a fall back in case it is the warmest Feb on record.
I am really glad to have joined in this year it has made me think a lot more about concept and execution.

Well I took my February shot today but it was pants because the lens I wanted to use is currently in for repairs and the minimum focus on the other one is something nasty.

I never had the back catalogue to root back into for stock shots anyway, and if I managed by some fluke to get a half decent picture I'd have posted it on here in any case, so the new submission rules hasn't really made much difference to me either way. But, if it stops "pot hunters" putting in a shot that's probably already won them goodenss knows how many other competitions in other places, then it's got to be a good thing.
I just wish that people would actually stick to the rules on the EXIF part of things - okay, there are issues with flickr - mainly due to having non-pro flickr accounts, or submitting flickr resized shots, but would it be so hard to put a direct link to the flickr metadata page below your shot if nothing else.
Out of the first 100 shots submitted in january, less than half the entrants had done what was asked of them! (48 had exif properly displayed - 33 needed to click-through to flickr, 9 had been voided for various transgressions and worryingly 10 shots had no exif shown at all.) It's a hard enough job for Marc to keep a handle on this competition as it is, without this (imho) staggeringly low level of co-operation from us! The rules have been posted for all to see - and a extra re-emphasis of the need for shooting within the timeframe of the competition, and the need for EXIF details to confirm this, and yet, over half of us seem incapable of complying. Personally, I hope that Marc takes a hardline on this from February. Perhaps a couple of dozen DQ's might help focus peoples attention
I thought the EXIF data just stayed magically in the photo. Am just about to upload my January entry (late as always). How do I find out if the EXIF data's still there?
Also it's difficult to crack down on including the EXIF data because of film submissions. :-/

I think click through to flickr is fine, the data is there just flickr are a pain and doesn't pass it through on the resized images. Mines in that pot atm but from next month I aim to self host so this issue will go away (until my hosting gets pulled knowing my luck ).
The exact wording in the rules is (my emphasis): With this in mind, EXIF data should be included where possibleSo I think so long as there is at least a reasonable attempt to provide proof of date (be that exif or what ever) then that should be fine. However if they clearly haven't bothered reading the rules (many have as proven by the Jan discussion re EXIF) then a void is the way to go.

Not at all - most commercial lab scanners will embed their own exif data into the picture - okay - so it's not the time of pressing the shutter, but it's arguable with film, that it's only a latent image until developed anyway, and certainly the only time you'll get to see the shot is after it's out of the minilab.
Admittedly, this doesn't cover people like myself who shoot film, develop our own work, and home scan, which is why, sadly, I'm going to be less likely to submit shots on film this year. I may submit something on film, if the subject matter SCREAMS out that it was shot "for the competition" - as for example with my january one, which was actually shot on digital - but there you go
I rather assumed those who still used film were self-developers, but I don't know a lot about film photography having only ever used P&S film cameras myself!
How do I work out if I've got EXIF data in my picture? I thought I could right click > properties to find it but that doesn't seem to work for online photos. "Image info" doesn't include it, does that mean it's not there or that I'm looking in the wrong place?
I'm willing to make the effort but I may need help

Click through to flickr is better than nothing - a direct link to the metadata page on flickr is even better. Sadly, some people have used flickr for hosting, but haven't included a back-link to the flickr account (which is actually a contravention of the terms of agreement with flickr!), so the only way to get back to their flickr account is to use some sort of reverse look-up website such as this one (http://curiouskiwi.com/Brenda/flickrsearch.htm). It is, however a faff, and turns what should be a 10 second task into a 2 minute one. Multiply this up by a hundred or so, for 12 months, and its a fair bit of time wasted. Hence my "call to arms" for people to just try a little harder to make the staff's job as easy as possible.

To be honest, looking through the entire 2010 entries, I'd be surprised if there were more than 20 entries shot on film in the year, so it's not a major problem - even hardened old film fogey that I am, I only did 4 out of 12
There are a number of ways to check the EXIF data. Opanda Iexif (http://www.opanda.com/en/iexif/)is one such way, or there are a number of add-ins for firefox...

I can't see the problem with a link back to Flickr? That's how mine is entered, and the metadata is available from the Flickr page.
Also Jeffery's Exif viewer (http://regex.info/exif.cgi)is the one I use for anything I want to snoop on! (though yes, resized, deirectly linked Flickr photos don't have Exif data intact)

Fair point, 2 clicks to 1 does save time especially over such a large volume. However I am of the opinion (flickr T+C aside) having no exif and no flickr link back is a void, just because a judge *could* find the image on flickr and look it up doesn't mean they should, besides I'm sure they have a whole bunch of other things he'd rather do.
Also competitors can (and should imo) help out by reporting images in breach of the contest rules.
Mark please remember that some software programes don't leave the exif data in the final image either.
For Januarys shot I used somewhere around 277ish images all merged together into one shot using startrails the only date left on the image is the date that the images were merged I'm not sure about how other programes such as focus stacking handle such things either.

I'm pretty much of the opinion that the date that the files was merged IS the date and time the picture was created in that case - similar to my argument about a "latent image" on a piece of film, and the scan date from the mahoosive Kyocera minilab I mentioned earlier. The thing is, at least you've tried to keep some date details. Some people have either not bothered, or, it seems to me, have gone out of their way to remove the data. These are the ones that I think are acting outside of the spirit of the competition - I say spirit, as after all, it was phrased as "With this in mind, EXIF data should be included where possible"
I agree it should be included where possible Mark and it does bug me a little that people don't read the rules and stick up images that weren’t taken within the time frame. I think that round 1 for this year has been a learning curve for many of us as far as the new rules go.

On a side note I know that it's possible to alter the exif data in a photo using certain exif viewers if people are so determined to cheat then I'm afraid that the inclusion of the exif rule won't stop them.
Sadly, when the rule changes were mooted, and a restricted timeframe was put on entries, I knew it would come to this. The very fact that so many people have been unable or unwilling to comply with a very basic rule saddens me to be honest. Okay - there are obvious exceptions - composite star-trails, film shots, etc. where the EXIF is either non-existant or not at the instant of shutter release, but that's not the vast majority of shots submitted so far. The fact that so far 6 shots have been canned for being outside the timeframe shows that people are either not reading the rules, or flouting them. It's meant as a friendly competition, and an exercise in developing your photographic abilities for goodness sakes - so either you shoot something for the competition and submit it or you don't submit something. Nobody will die because you don't enter.
All I'm trying to say here, is can't we all just read the rules, stick by them, and do what we can to make the staff's job as easy as we can as a thankyou to them for running this competition?
I'm feeling a little less excited about my shot now, for some reason?!

Having looked back through some previous months I can see why some folks have cheated in the past, there where some serious prizes on offer (1 month stands out to me) which will often lead to people gaming the system as it where. It's a shame but seems to be a fact of life.
I am also treating this as a learning experience, both my shots so far (Jan entry and my Feb bank shot) have both taken about an hour or so each with me tweaking bits trying to get exactly the look I was thinking of.

Okey doke. Then we'll keep it just between us. ;)
Well I have posted my effort for this theme, did not quite work as well as I had hoped ( looked a lot better in my head) but I think the concept was quite good just a little let down by the execution.
I am really enjoying entering these gives a bit of motivation to get taking photos. I am sure one of the themes will play to my strengths

Well that's it then... waste of time me bothering posting anything this month
You can post shots from anywhere in the world, providing they were taken after 12-01-2011, at 09:18 which is the start of this months competition timeframe.
You will need your shots hosted with someone on the internet, or with TP's own gallery. If you can organise this, then ask again, and someone will help you out with the next stage, i'm sure

It'll be sometime after the poll closes for January I'd expect. Hope so at least, as I'd get awfully confuddled organising the leaderboard for one month, shooting second month, and worrying about the third.

I think that the problem i'm having is that the topic naturally lends itself to a outside shot, but that's weather depedent, and I'm just sat here, watching weather forecasts for a dozen locations and counting the days off in a short month! I've already tried 2 of my backup ideas and they suck. Big Time. I even found myself wishing I was still working at the Ice Cream Company for a few seconds, until I managed to snap out of it

Well - that's another option that I can't try... Mrs Yin refused point blank to model for me, when I came up with a song-inspired image (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUFO_04J1r4)... can't think why
(not that I was sugesting to throw her all over a stage or anything... just a slightly creepy shot featuring a toe-tag and a freezer )
I'm starting to work on this theme now - I've not looked at the entries thread, so don't know what has been posted or whether my idea has already been done. I decided that was a good way to go about it and just hope that no one else had my idea!!
I was hoping for some nice cold weather again, but I give up, gonna start stuffing stuff in the freezer...

No probs Mark. I'll also add a note when I put up the poll to make sure people know that it's a valid voteable entry.

Unfortunately, we have to take it as if it was being opened at the most puritanical workplace. It's not about what we think, it's about what the viewer's employer might think.
I understand why it's done and to be fair if just one member wasn't able to visit the forum from work becase of something I'd posted then I'd feel guilty as hell so fair play.
It would have to be one hell of a puritanical workplace though to ban access for the entry in question when you can see images of a much more graphical nature in the daily papers.

As per Karl - I wasn't actually questioning the fact that it needed to be marked as NSFW - i've actually worked at a place that would have seen you lose your internet access for anything like that image going through their proxy server - it was more a comment that if a back and bum were unsafe, what would I have had to do with a blue woman dressed in a toe-tag and reclining in a deep-freeze

Very true... but if someone posts a pretty much definitive version of what you intended, then you're often better binning the idea, and shooting something original, than posting a weaker "me too" entry.

Well that's a point, but part of me says that's just an excuse to make your version even better and that a new idea would be hurried and done for the sake of it.
I'm curious as to why people are worried about someone else getting an idea in first. Surely it's about best rather than fastest?
It never worries me, I just think it would be a bit boring if there were a whole host of identical looking shots. Granted it would then be down to technical merit etc.

Fair comment again. Though personally I'd sooner not be posting (say) the 17th image of a bottle lying in a bucket of crushed ice (no offence to the people who have posted this very image - in fact I liked the shots very much, and would rather not compete directly with your images, as I'm sure i'd come off very much second best!).
Last year's competition threw up a month where there were lots of "me too" images - the high speed photography round - where there were lots of water drop shots (at least 30 out of 132 entries!) I quickly decided that there was no point whatsoever in trying to compete with people who had already been doing that sort of thing for the last 6 months, especially as at the time, I hadn't even realised that my Canon 450D actually had a built in flash (I know, I KNOW!) as using flash just never came up on my radar. So - I went outside the box - perhaps a little too far outside the box, but at least I picked up a couple of votes, which I'd have been highly unlikely to have done with even the best of my 1500+ water drop shots (yes - i DID try it, that was the object of last years comp - to try new processes or methods).
All fair comment guys, just not sure if I had put a lot of hard work into an image that I'd be happy to bin it if someone else post something similar before me.

If I had already taken the shot and put time and effort into it then I agree with you fabs I would still enter it than write it off.
For this theme I hadn't actually taken the shot yet hence going back to the drawing board.
Considering what I original thought of doing, my plan B and actual entered shot was somewhat more challenging to obtain, which I take as a plus point.

Okay, back to the Exif thing... It's not something I ever paid attention to before but I have just been experimenting with some of the Exif viewers recommended in this thread, and it seems that my version of Photoshop (which is admittedly very old, v6, pre-CS) does not preserve Exif data, at least not for jpgs. I couldn't get the website to load the tiffs.
Is it okay to write the data in manually? I could provide a screendump of the RAW info in DPP if it were really necessary but I'd rather not faff around with taking and uploading a bunch of extra stuff unless I really had to.
Well I just included the screenshot anyway for February since I had it there in front of me. Not sure I want to do that every month though.

Now that was a tough one! We had a really cold January here in Germany where subject would have been easy to come by. February has been rather mild (although the last 2 days have been -8, typical as my shot is in now) and taken quite a lot of thought! My wife came up with the idea for the shot and voulentered to be my guinea pig! I wasn't sure if the shot I had in mind could be achieved but am quite happy with the result.
Looking forward to March now!

Hopefully there's going to be a late flurry (ouch!) of entries before the cut-off tomorrow, as everyone that's been holding out for a snowstorm decides to post their "get out of jail free" image instead.
Personally, i'm looking forward to seeing how people have thought "out of the box" on this one - much as I enjoy snowy landscape shots - and would have happily shot and submitted one myself - it'll be great to see just how far and wide peoples imaginations can roam

Hi guys, i was just about to upload my entry for this month and have released that my new 60d camera hasnt had the date and time set since i bought it. the date on the pics that i took for the comp is back in may 2010. now the exif data shows that its a canon eos 60d, and the release date of the canon 60d was in august 2010 which proves i couldnt have taken then picture back then (plus the fact that theres no snow in moscow in may lol) so will i be able to enter my picture with this misinformation???

Agreed - what's the worst that can happen? it gets DQ'ed and you don't have an entry - or you don't submit one at all, and you don't have an entry...

O yes except it's not really part of the diet but we must pay a big price for our art :D

I have added my entry, but as I haven't changed the in-camera copyright notice (still 2010), then here is the exif data:

Thanks.

Glad you mentioned that - i've just checked my camera, and i'd not updated either! :bonk:Still - I'm not too worried - it's pretty plain to see from the contents of my picture that it was taken expressly for the competition.

Hey, you don't suppose that all those impressionist painters drank Absinthe for the fun of it, do you :gag: we got to suffer for our art maaannn!
Alcohol seems to be playing a large part in this months theme, brought it home to me when I saw Scott's church down by Ware and all I could think of was hey I've been there and I was drunk for almost the entire week.

I didn't say I was suffering ;) but alcohol does help provide some of the best ideas.

It should have been Formaldehyde for my entry

I did wonder what sort of artists this group were, seeing so many alcohol related pictures!

my original idea was blown out of the water when i couldn't find anyone with a baby :suspect:
from when the theme of so cold was announced i had the idea of doing a triptych of ice ice baby. i even bought the bags of bloody ice... just couldn't get the final part :bang:
ah well... i wonder how long my idea for 'be still' will take to be binned :D

This competition must have worked wonders for the sale of ice!
I know exactly what you mean - I can see me posting one of my shots of something out of the 'fridge at five to midnight on the 28th :shake:
Yeah, my shot WAS the fridge at nearly midnight :D
I knew weeks ago that's what I was going to do, but I took me til today to get and paint the little soldiers. Couldn't possibly be happy with cheap little green plastic ones now! Really enjoyed painting them too.

There's some serious cutting it fine going on this month!
With the amount of time I mess about with PP these days, I wouldn't dare still be shooting at after 11:00pm... I admire your nerve!
I like the single jar of Nescafe in the top of the bucket
Well someone had to stay sober incase they were needed to do a beer run:cool:
that was for one night right?
For some reason people didn't drink as much on the second night:shrug:
Just thinking, if the site goes down now there'll be lots of tears.:D

I'd bet that the clock in your camera is still on BST!
It's pretty obvious that your shot was taken for the competition - a nice touch might have been to embed (http://qrcode.kaywa.com/) the TP Competiton Details into the QR Code

Oh jeez! I was reading this on my iPod and scrolling down. My heart skipped until I got to joking! Luckily I am already lying down. :)
