... I know I've tried to.

Well I eventually got a CF card for my Sony today and then simply nipped out into the garden to make sure it all worked.

These are a few pics I took and have done pretty much nothing to them other than a slight crop and resize then upload them to my gallery on this site.
No idea if the filesize is going to mean they are too small to really evaluate/condemn or not but thought I'd just stick them up for a comment or two if you'd be so mean/kind.

I have all the exposure info if it's of any use.

Good thing - you've got something to work with on all the shots.

Bad things - dead leaves always degrade flower shots.

The first one, if you can repair the leaf on the right and the one on the bottom, it's be a good shot. Personally, I'd like to see the focus a little further back, but that's just a personal preference.

Second shot - I like the composition, but it looks a bit, erm, strange. Did you use flash? I'd try to up the exposure, hue and saturation maybe.

Third shot - best of the bunch for me. However, I'd get rid of what looks like a hair on the tip on the top right, and I'd crop out the flower in the bottom left corner out, as it looks like it's on its last legs. Again, I'd tweak the hue and saturation.

Fourth shot - just a bit of cloning to get rid of the gunk in the cat's eyes, and maybe up the exposure by half a stop. Nice focus though.

Hope that helps.

Help? Yes, very much so Ta.

Agree with pretty much eveything you said. Teh subjects were literally the most obvious choices in my garden. So ignoring the dead stuff etc as much as possible as I'd be far pickier if the subject were the aim rather than just making sure the gear worked OK. IYSWIM.

The second one does have some flash as I was shooting up to the light.
Just playing about really.

Third one. Yes I saw that after the event, even went outside to make sure it was actually on the plant. It was.

Cat. I have got him to wash behind his ears though

At least I have things to work on .
Cheers.

Had a little play in CS2 (first time I've used it) but not sure there is an improvement or just a difference.

I was expecting/hoping the pics would be mercilessly pulled apart.

so I'll add another and see what happens ;)

Ok, You asked... so living up to my reputation..

1st. The object is dying if not dead. Angle and lighting could be better. The DOF is too shallow, and the shot is probably a bit cluttered.

2nd Looks like a messed up attempt with fill in flash.

3rd Not bad but not inspiring, weird dark brown line in background doesnt help. Lose the hair on the end. DOF could be better.

4th Eye contact, bit under exposed, needs a sharpen to bring out the fur.

5th Almost eye contact, shadow on left (rightmost) eye/side of face loses detail. Needs a sharpen.
**** that purple cr*p?

Keep posting

Use your imagination, picture what you want to achieve with your shot in your head, then look at how its possible, then go and practice until you get close to what you had in your mind. Everyone here will help with the technicals of how to achieve that look.

Don't be negative about your pictures, if you like them, thats all that matters.

Welcome, look forward seeing more shots.

Ps: I had a play

Good, that's what I want.
None of this pussy-footing about.

so 1st one.
Angle & lighting and DOF.
Something to work on.

2nd was the first time I've ever used the camera with flash so your estimation was correct.

3rd The dark brown lines are the fence in the background.

4th

5th the shadow is a poor attempt at losing some very distracting whiteness.
No idea what the purple crap comment is about

And the disclaimer is that it was the first time I've ever used that camera, the first time I've ever used a digi camera & the first time I've ever been restricted to what just happens to be in my back garden as subject matter.

TBH I'm not used to this manipulation stuff, the last time I was into this lark you had what you took and that was that.
On that note is it possible to give an opinion on the abilites of the camera?

Liberalis, now that is something like the image I had pictured. But no idea how to achieve that with CS2 (or anything other than a magic spell).
BTW I'm not really negative, just critical of my own efforts. And any criticism will help that improve I guess.

I fear a steep learning curve with the digital malarkey may be on the cards.

The top one would respond by saying : "Yes of course you do"
The second one would be your friend forever.

Yep I like the cat too, The shape of its head is strange somehow or the angle of the shot makes its ears look massive..

Nice shot of the cat though..

Oh that.
Doesn't look very purple on my screen tbh.
But it's this then:
5th the shadow is a poor attempt at losing some very distracting whiteness.

What beautiful cats you have - Orientals or Oriental & meeze?

I like the 2nd shot you posted - it has potential, just needs a little fiddling about with levels / saturation (somewhere inbetween the original and Liberalis' edit would be great). the colour contrasts work really well.

Ratty
27-07-2007, 19:36
minimeeze, what you say about the 2nd one is exactly what I was after, something between the two versiosn here would be perfect(ish).
It was the orange/blue that made me lie on the floor for it.

The cats are brothers, Siamese . :)

BTW all shots were taken hand-held, haven't put it on the tripod yet.

Maybe a touch overdone but that is an impressive bit of editing!

Ratty - Looking very promising. There are faults but nothing that can't be fixed with a bit of experience. Onwards and upwards :)

I wonder if your monitor needs calibrating Ratty. That purple snakey trail on the right of the second cat pic seems pretty clear to me.

Mind you, having dodgy eyes probably doesn't help.

BTW I did say this already... "a poor attempt at losing some very distracting whiteness"

Amazing what happens when you sort out the monitor calibration.

I was expecting/hoping the pics would be mercilessly pulled apart.

Well give me a chance, I've been out and you're the first person here I know I don't want to be nice too. ;)

TBH, these can be looked at two ways. As a kit check, you've got a couple of shots that could be worked into really nice images and that's a pretty big bonus.

The other way says that as a collection of shots, I know you'd be no happier with them than I would (there, you wanted merciless ;) ) and if you hadn't posted them here they'd be swelling your recycle bin.

The one I really like though is the first shot. I love the dead bits of petals and the way the petals and greenery in the lower half are all horizontal, while in the top half it's all vertical. The curled lips on the frontmost petals would also have been my choice of spot to focus on.

Ratty
28-07-2007, 01:44
:'(

Probably no surprise ...
The first way is the reality but the second is the way to go.
The first image you picked up on everything as I did .
As for not being nice ... 2/10. can do better :p

Okay, as everybody is being much too kind here.

Put quite simply ... the pics are all crap and you need to give your cats to me!

Cant be more blunt than that ;)

Btw, have you given the pics a sharpen before uploading, as any cropping resizing for web will soften your images and these all look pretty soft to me.

Look forward to more cat pics!

No sharpening or anything technical like that on them.
So when the expert(?) arrives here I'll hassle him for soem basic tuiton . (hello Daz )

So I have two people wanting the cats.
Well if you give me your address I'll send them on their way.
All I want in return is occasional access rights.
:)

A couple of things.

First....we both know that I've already booked Daz as my personal tutor:rules: And second....if Bob and Moz are leaving home they are coming down here to live with me...I've even got a good supply of carrier bags for them:lol:
