View Full Version : POTY 2011 - Round 1 - New Beginnings (Voting)

fabs

This is multiple choice, so you may vote for as many or as few images that you like, but they have to chosen in one go, you CANNOT come back and vote for more at a later date.

Take a look through the entries (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=284619) and note the post number of the images you like (top right of each post....you'll notice a #1 above this post for example).

Please do NOT vote for the entries marked VOID.

This poll will close in 7 days.

Thanks :)

 and I have to say I'm impressed at how quick the poll was up this month - if I'd have know I'd have stayed online another 5 minutes last night and voted straight away

Now there's just another 7 days of trying not to check the poll every 10 minutes to see if anyone else has voted

Some good shots to kick off the new year then! I found myself voting for less this time than I have previously.... I thought some shots were, although really top notch, not quite keeping with the theme, and it pained me a little to not vote for them!

But I'm chuffed that 1 person has voted for mine, and it wasn't even me :D

still only 85 votes though for over 100 entries.... come on get into the polling booths people!

Mark (TBY), do you have any stats on number of voters against number of entries by any chance? would be interesting to know, i saw the breakdown you did of the entries in 2010 against 2009 and there were massive fluctuations throughout the months... i'm a sucker for figures (yes, those kind as well :D)

I think i've got stats for most things, somewhere or other ;)

Overall, we usually manage to get more voters than entrants (even if it is still only people voting for themselves!), especially so when we get the advert on the home page, as with December 2010... Only occasionally do we have attacks of apathy where not even all the people who enter manage to vote.

Stats Here (http://www.mb-software.co.uk/tp/POTY_EntriesAndVotes.htm) !

It's always been multiple votes, yes... You can vote for as many as you like, as long as none of them are your own shot this year! It's surprising how many people have voted for just one entry tbh... At least 9 people have done so far this month

As to voting for your own shot, it's certainly mentioned in the rules this year not to do so...

How to submit an entry

Each month, a new thread will be started in the Photographer of the Year Forum (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=29), with the round details in, entitled "Entries". To enter, simply post your image in the thread.
There will also be a second thread running concurrently, entitled "Discussion", This thread allows discussion regarding the month's theme.
At the end of the round, a poll will be added where you can vote for your favourite photographs. This will be a multiple choice poll, where you may vote for as many or as few shots as you like. Please do not vote for your own entry.
Voting ends at 23:59 on the 7th of the following month (roughly 7 days voting).
Entries containing nudity must be posted as a link to your image with a NSFW warning next to it.
Please do not post a 'place holder' or 'temporary entry'. Once you have posted an entry, you may not change it. If you do change it, your entry may be disqualified.

i do vote carefully.. but i don't think i could pick just 1. i think i went for 4. Not #4, but 4 entries :bonk:
That's not to say that i didn't vote for #4 though... i'll shut up now.

Well - as part of doing the leaderboard, I have a routine that "screen scrapes" the poll - basically does a text screenshot of the poll, and drops it into a file. when the number of people who has cast a vote goes up by 1, and the number of votes cast goes up by one, then that person has voted for one entry. Simples. Only thing is, if more than one person has voted in between "scrapes" a single vote may be masked by another person voting for say 8 entries. So - I can't say that there have been definitely 9 people who have single-voted. But I can say that at least 9 people have done so.

It's all down to personal taste at the end of the day - I really rated a few of the shots this month, but only voted for a sub-set of them, as some lovely pictures didn't really fit the topic to me - maybe I wasn't thinking outside the same box as the person who shot the picture, who knows :)

Glad you liked the breakdown - it does highlight one or two things - mainly that if there's going to be an advert for the POTY voting, then it needs to be all year or not at all imho - look how the December 2010 poll results were so much higher than the rest of the year - it's bound to skew the results overall.

I'm kicking myself so hard right now:bang:

The story behind my shot is that it's startrails with a local lighthouse, I've always like the startrails photos so I thought I would give it a try hence new beginnings..

I finished work at midnight so set out to give it a try, the lighthouse is on a small island a few hundred meters of the shore and accessed via a tidal causeway, I placed myself on the island in a position where I could get the shot and keep an eye on the causeway for the incoming tide the waves were breaking quite a distance from the causeway and I was feeling happy to continue. Around 1:10 am I went for a walk around the island as I was the only person on it I managed to find a sign with all the tide times printed on it strange I thought to myself according to this the tide came in 10 minutes ago and yet the waves are nowhere near the causeway.

Yes you guessed it the water had risen and the waves still broke in the same place,:gag: I was stuck out there for 6 hours at -6c I almost took a photo of myself as a human icicle for this month’s competition as it was so cold, wife was none to impressed with the phone call telling her not to wait up I’m stranded until 7am and the daughter posted it on facebook for all my workmates to see they are still taking the pi**.:(

But to make matters worse I posted the shot because it didn’t look like I was going to get a better one with no more clear nights forecast within the timeframe for the competition, the night after I posted my entry the clouds disappeared allowing me to get what I feel is a far better image. :bang::bang::bang:

Oh well you live and you learn. On the plus I've got a few votes so it seems worth it now I've defrosted.

what kind of duration of exposure was it in total - might have a go with the Pinhole camera as I can just leave that outside with a 10 stop ND installed and get 4 hours out of a single exposure on 100iso film - or am I missing something obvious

Keenbfb
06-02-2011, 00:08
Not to sure of how it would work with film to be honest, this one was 216 shots of 15 seconds each all at F8 iso 400, the longer exposure the better I've read but I had a light on the light house and any longer would have killed it for me. Would you get much noise on film with a 4 hour exposure?

This site explains it much better than I can

We don't call it noise, it's grain - and it's meant to be there. To be honest, if the films exposed correctly, then it should be no more grainy than a shot at mid-day. It's just digital sensors getting overheated and giving hot pixels with long exposures. Having said that, I've done a bit of reading into longer exposures on film, and the big problem seems to be that film gets very non-linear as far as long exposures are concerned - reciprocity fail (http://home.earthlink.net/%7Ekitathome/LunarLight/moonlight_gallery/technique/reciprocity.htm) - and it seems that it's different for pretty much every film  So - I guess it's a non-starter. Just thought I'd be happier leaving a £30 piece of plastic on a tripod outside for 8 hours (well - i'd definitely not be sat by it's side counting elephants for all that time, would I!) than the digital camera tbh
