Welcome to the 2011 Talk|Photography Photographer Of The Year Competition.
Sponsored By: Vision Graphix
http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/../images/externallogos/banners/vision_graphix_460x68.gif (http://www.visiongraphix.co.uk/)
Vision Graphix will provide a print of the winning image for the winner each month
This year, the themes are designed to make you think, to encourage the imagination.
The deadline for entries is the 11:59pm on the last day of the month, shortly after that a POLL will be made for you to vote for you favourite entries that month. This process will then repeat each month with a leader board being published after each round. The winner of each month will receive a prize (this will be announced each month). The member with the most votes at the end of the year will win the coveted TP POTY Trophy.
So on with the competition;
The theme for March is:
'BE STILL!'
If it doesn't move, capture it. Presentation is everything.

I reckon this will be interpreted in a vast amount of ways.
I have an idea already!

Afternoon All.
I'm new to all this palaver of competitions because I've always thought of myself as too fragile to take the constructive criticism. But you seem like a nice buch, so I think I'll have a go - even though my mind has drawn a total blank on the themes for both Feb and March.
How can you have shot something for feb already????? It's only 9 days old!
Well don't hold your breath for my entry but I will be interested to see what you make of it!

Afternoon All.
Afternoon Wendy, Welcome aboard :)
I'm new to all this palaver of competitions because I've always thought of myself as too fragile to take the constructive criticism. But you seem like a nice buch, so I think I'll have a go - even though my mind has drawn a total blank on the themes for both Feb and March.
Well - there's not so much critique on the competition thread tbh. as it could be construed as either "bigging up" a shot, or "running it down". Where someone has for example missed out the EXIF details to ensure that the picture was taken within the timeframe of the competition, it usually gets pointed out, to save them losing out on entering. You're not the only one thats drawing a blank on february though!
How can you have shot something for feb already????? It's only 9 days old!
It's simple - the february topic was announced on 12-01-2011 @ 09:18, and all shots have to be taken AFTER that time and submitted before 23:59:59 on 28/02/2011 to be eligeable for february. So, some of the well prepared people have been shooting for nearly 4 weeks now! Others of us are still at the deciding what the H E double hockey sticks to have a bash at!
Well don't hold your breath for my entry but I will be interested to see what you make of it!
Have a go, you could be pleasantly surprised - a few of our new starters were in January's polls :)

Lol, no cold blooded reptiles this month, thats too easy :D, off out to shoot something specific later today though.
I cant believe people are struggling for ideas for this, there's so much you can incorporate. I will be buying props for mine in the next couple of weeks ;)
Got to be honest the idea for this one came to me quicker than the ideas for Jan and Feb, not that it will look the same on the screen as it does in my head.

Well - unless I can find someone making bootleg hooch in the wilds of Yorkshire (not necessarily impossible I understand ;)) I'm a good 200+ miles away from shooting anything of the kind, so get in there and get it shot, and post it up on 1st March - beat the rest to the draw
I think probably that is my shot. Ah but which distillery? Was going to go to Aviemore to get some so cold pictures in the snow and could stop at Dalwhinnie or I could go to the Famous Grouse, it's nearer - I go there loads. Or I could try someplace different like Tullibardine, it's my nearest that offers tours. :D I liked Glenmorangie best. It has a really nice still room.

Those still's look like they are made out of wood rather than copper.
I've done the tours at both Talisker and Glenkinchie but really want to get back up to Forres where I lived as a child for a few years and get around the Benromach distillery just for the hell of it.
Does anyone else suddenly feel thirsty?!

On-topic, this has gotta be the perfect time for the 10fps gang get to flex their camera's power. Flash for me but the old noggin is running low on creative juice.....
I'm all happy my props for this one turned up this morning now all I have to do is find out where I can download the skill level to make it a reallity:lol:
I'm ahead of myself this month. Unlike me to be first to post, but I thought I would get my March entry out of the way. Not my usual sort of photo but I am unlikely to think of anything more suitable.
Hopefully this will give me more time to concetrate on April's theme when it is announced.

Well - my main idea for this has just fallen through :( Required permission for shooting on private premises and was turned down for the old "Health and Safety Grounds - Tripod Constitutes a Trip Hazzard" chestnut. I'm sorely tempted to dive in there and shoot it "Guerilla Style" anyway... I dunno - you try and do things by the book, and what do you get :bonk:
@ Mark - There might be a bit of blur in your shots then as you're legging it away... :)

Mmmm, a bit of blur in a 'be still' shot, this is one of my ideas for this month, it'll show some imagination in the interpretation of the subject.........
In fact, I've already shot what is my backup shot and that's got a bit of motion mixed in :D not sure it'll get any votes though but it's fun all the same

That sounds suspiciously like my idea, so I've entered early this month to get my idea cemented in. Hope I haven't spoiled it for anyone. :D
I actually took a 'model' to the town centre with me, and ordered him to stand still whilst I took some shots. After he left the lady in the shot quite kindly (unbeknownst to her) sat still with the pushchair for me. I had packed my gear away, and had to get everything out again before the left. :bonk:

Your idea may be different, mine wasn't even down to the black and white for the final image just as well I didn't pay new prices for the filtters I've brought to get my shot.
Plan B and C both could put me in hospital, Scott kindly supply me with the address to send the invoce for the bunch of grapes.;)
[...]
EDIT TO ADD APOLOGY AND REMOVED MOAN - Haven't had my coffee this morning and it's obviously entry 74 from the previous month (someone else's) and not entry 74 from this month (mine) that had been voided... Sorry fabs!!!
Maybe the mods could PM those who get their entries void-ed for various reasons to give them a chance to clean up, as it's kind of ruining a lot of the fun with the competition ;( ...
Sorry, not with you. Your entry wasn't voided.

I keep going around and around in circles on this one... Original idea fell through due to not being allowed access to shoot, fall back idea was dependent on getting hold of quite a few props and a fair bit of set building.
Now I've got pretty much everything together, I just don't seem to be able to get any time to build the set up and shoot it. Oh for a empty room where I could just leave things rigged up. At the moment, I get maybe 2 hours to shoot, and spend 45 minutes rigging the set, 20 minutes dressing it with props and maybe 10 minutes shooting before I need to rip everything down again and return the room to being an immaculate bedroom.
Especially after the 3 days of "all signal, no noise" that I got after leaving a toe-tag :bonk:on the bed last month

Well - that's me in for another month.
Now to think of something for April's competition with a slightly less morbid theme than my last two have had! I'm currently on my second day of the silent treatment after MrsYin put her head around the door to my makeshift studio and spotted my building (in her words) "some sort of warped pagan altar thing"... I really don't think she grasps the finer points of Vanitas Still Life's... not big on 17th Century Dutch/Flemish painters isn't MrsYin.

Hmmmmm.... :naughty:
:nono: no - she'd probably sue me for half my cameras

I think that maybe my original idea for my month 2 (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showpost.php?p=3392121&postcount=102) competition entry would be cheaper still - if only I had 5'4" of space in the freezer...

You might be in the dog house for the number of oranges you must have wasted to get the peel right.

Ahh, now that's not a problem - she drinks G&T, so lemons just get sliced and dropped into Icecube trays after a shoot - instant Ice and a Slice for her ;)

It's not immediately obvious it's a Lemon tbh... In the composition earlier on the Sunday, it was right next to the Orange so you could tell even with the "Old Master Varnish" going on. Sadly, I had to shuffle things a little as I needed a bit of Orange Zest to go in the Vichy Carrots with the sunday dinner, so the Orange in that bowl had a big bare spot on one side, and had to be hidden behind the Pear

Got a shot last night, not what I was hoping to do originally but got something at least.
Will PP and post tonight as I got bored of doing the rejects from the weekends togging (I don't envy you people who come home with 1000s of shots from a weekend, I got fed up mid way through about 200, now a much more manageable number as it seems I can't take a level in focus shot to save my life.)

If I came home with 1000 shots from a weekend i'd be spending the next 2 days in the sink processing film and the following fortnight scanning film! I went digital this month again, and probably took more frames for this months entry than any other I've done, but that was because I was trying to learn how to use the flash kit without a lightmeter. Didn't enjoy it one bit, and I've now ordered a decent meter before I try again

I used a flash without a meter for mine, took me maybe 3 shots to get the exposure how I wanted it and then another 2 when I added the on board (which I later took back out again as I took out the items I need it for). I think your too film to chimp/adjust
My new thing for this month was I shot the whole set tethered as I knew I needed to see the images big and adjust and didn't fancy mucking around with memory cards in and out every 3 seconds. Was kind of cool to have the images there on screen 5 seconds after pressing the shutter and meant I could really see if I had the exposure and composition right.
Was using http://www.sofortbildapp.com/ to pull the shots from the camera to my mac, then using autoimport in lightroom to get to where I can work with them.
I tried tethered as well this month laptop on the other side of the room and the iPhone used as the trigger, as you say kinda cool, got the shots I wanted then played around in post processing for the rest of day then, rejected the image two days later because it just didn't do it for me.
1000's shots for a weekend I went to my first model shoot last week think I took over 900 shots in just 3 hours.

Guilty as charged, mlud... though you say it as if it's a bad thing  My problem was, that I was trying to get back into using flash for what was probably the first serious time in over 15 years. And, to be honest, everything I knew about using flash BITD was based on film, and on having an accurate flash meter that you knew you could rely upon. So changing to shooting with digital, and chimping for the exposure with 2 flashes and 3 specifically angled reflectors and maybe another 4 flags soaking up unwanted light was a bit of a stretch for me. Enjoyable though, and I did actually run a couple of frames of 35mm as well, after studiously copying all my settings over from the 7D :)

And just to prove I'm not actually a complete luddite, I was actually shooting my stuff tethered too! Started off with Canon EOS Utility's tethered shooting routine, but after i'd got somewhere near with the camera settings, went over to Lightroom 3.3's tethered capture routine, so I could see shots with my initial processing applied automagically :)
Shooting tethered has just gone on my list of things to try this year. I must get my ass into gear. This month has suffered a complete lack of inspiration and motivation :sigh:
I do have an idea for next month though... Just need to borrow a dog...

all this competition entering is doing my swede in. Another well laid plan gone down the swanny... resorted to using this morning's fog as my ally!
it's a relief to get the entry in, but a bit of a let down that i couldn't get what i wanted :bonk:
I have to admit that this month was a struggle!
I always try to think of something different that maybe no-one else will think of, but the only other idea I had involved a spilt bottle of Superglue and a small stripey insect, and I thought that would be cruel!
Far kinder to simply have my daughter chased through the woods by my brother wielding a sickle! :D:D:lol::lol:

I cannot think what on earth you could be referring to... http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-angelic002.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)
I was gonna leave it till the last minute to see if I could come up with an alternative, but a stinker of a cold convinced me I'm unlikely to get out for anything else. Ah well

Posted. I also borrowed a big bag of slides from mum but couldn't get them to look any good as the piece of glass I have wasn't really big enough for them not to dominate the frame.
Just a thought it may be worth adding a link in each months announcement to the how to post a picture thread most of us are old hands at it but it still seems to catch a few people out, 2 so far this month.

That's a fair point Karl.
Fabs / Mods.
I did see two people asking for upload advice and no pictures, so I posted in that forum how to upload an image. Not correct I know but I figured it was better to post and let them know how to post an image. More of a friendly community vibe that way, rather than being ignored and potentially going somewhere else. :)
I agree with Karl too. Add a link at the top of the competition may solve some of these questions, well it can't do any harm anyway. :)
Best to do it via PM in those instances, keeps the entry thread clean. TBY had already done it on this occasion (I did the first one). If in doubt, RTM.
D'oh! Completely forgot about PM!!! :bonk:
No worries, all comes out in the wash. ;)

I hope I submitted my entry OK - Sorry it's a real last minute effort - I literally took it about half hour to an hour back, then did a bit of jiggery pokery.
I don't know how to put the EXILIF stuff on??
But it was shot on a Pentax K1000D with 18-55mm lens. Set on manual at about 18mm - F4.5? at about 3-4 seconds. Set up on the Hama Traveller Compact Pro tripod - (But that wouldn't have been on the EX thing anyway.

Last few minutes thread bump - under a hour to get your shot in for this month!
Hmmmm wasnt quite what i had in mind but then my imagination always seems to outweigh my ability! My only claim to fame this month may be that I was last entry? or close to it anyway. Some lovely pictures this month!
Got mine in by the skin of my teeth...
New what I wanted to shoot but only got around to it tonight - nothing quite like the last minute!
Anyhow - think I cracked the spinning pin - not sure it is the best of the bunch but hey ho...
Good luck all
