I managed to get this shot reaching over the shrubs and sort of teetering around on one leg after I'd given up on all attempts to get the tripod erected in there. :annoyed:

I want to see the frame where you tumbled over and got him stuck on the front of the lens. ;)

Nice work, I did a few of these myself a few months ago and was fortunate enough to be able to get on the underside of the critter. I found that getting the whole thing sharp was fairly difficult so well done you teeterer

He wasn't much bigger than a match head actually, but despite that, he was a massive DOF problem, and I couldn't get a more oblique shot at him to lessen the DOF problem. In the end I went for an f16 shot and 1000th sec with hi speed flash which resulted in slight under-exposure, but I pulled it back in RAW editing.

ISO 200, Canon 180L Macro.

thanks CT. What sort of distance are you shooting from? When I use those sort of settings I'm badly under exposed, I think it's too close to get flash coverage with 1:1

I was shooting probably from about 18 inches with the 180 Macro, and I always get flash coverage with that lens anyway. With the 580 EX there's a macro setting where the head just clicks downward a little more.

The shooting distance with the 180L is a big advantage, but on the other hand you can imagine the hand holding problems with that focal length and there's less DOF than you'd get with your 100 macro so it's swings and roundabouts really. :)

Btw the 180L is one of the Canon lenses which conveys distance info to the flashgun which is no doubt a big help, but I think your 100 macro does that too?
