Hi All...

I'm playing around with my photos from South Africa and would like to know what you think of the following... (It's been edited [obviously]...)

http://www.dan-taylor.co.uk/images/opinions/IMG_2608EW2.jpg
I think I've managed to re-create the same image and I'm going to get it printed today. You can see the large version here (http://www.dan-taylor.co.uk/images/IMG_2608EP.jpg).

Does this sunset look better?

I can provide larger images if you need...

Thanks,

Amnesia

Actually looks like th bottom of the clouds have been erased. Anyway, a lot of colour going on...bit too orange for my personal taste - but maybe that is because the image is small and colours are condensed. Would have been nice to have had something larger in the foreground to silhouette.

The rays of the sun add something mystical which is great.

MMMMmmm....it may have been more effective if you had posted a larger version.

Still a nice shot though and you have made me jealous with your location!!

great sunset, but as mentioned, to make a really good picture needs a strong silhouette in the foreground.

THanks for the feedback.

I'll post a larger version tonight.

The clouds haven't been erased lol, but I see what you mean...

Hmmm... how to photoshop a silhouette :P lol

Shows how subjective photography is because I love this shot! The clouds and the colours are spot on for me. It feels very vibrant and has a lovely feeling of warmth to it. A very simple yet effective shot.

I agree with mini - I reckon printed on a canvas it would look great

Thanks for the comments all!!

Although, I'm left with a problem. I'm a total beginner and very new to photo editing. I adjusted the levels slightly (to get this shot) but I resized it to 600x400 for web viewing and only saved that version... (as .jpg) So, i can't really get it printed onto canvas unless I make an exact version of it - I think i'll be playing around with these shots some more tonight :)

Edit: Seeing as I only have this in 600x400 size - When re-sizing images, how do I know what height and width to make it so it will fit onto canvas (for instance, a 30"x20" canvas?) I basically need to know how to keep it proportionate so it doesn't distort when being applied to canvas... or do I just send the image to the printers and let them deal with that :)

Thanks again!

It is quite simple. If you have a 600x400 image that has been resized from the original and kept the same ratio. Then 600/400=1.5 and 30/20=1.5 both have identical ratios. Easy.

And if you want a 8" by 6" print then that ratio is 8/6 which is a ratio of 1.333... so you need to have one sie 1.33333. times longer than the other. Very simple.

Ahhh! Simple mathematics... why didn't I think of that :)

Thanks!!

P.s: Is there a key I can hold in Photoshop to keep it in proportion like that? I know if I hold shift it'll stay a square...

I've put another Sunset in the original post... does that look any better as I've included a sillouhette?

I think I'd like to see the originals to see how much they have been processed! They look far too orange IMO.

Presumably you mean when cropping as there is a 'keep proportions' option on the Resize Image dialogue?

If you select the crop tool it lets you specify the size you want (such as "30 in" x "20 in") then when you use the tool it will stay in the appropriate proportion.

They haven't been processed that much, this is an African Sunset, very red in the first place.

All I've done in the first one is adjust the levels then added some blue (to the top).

In the second I adjusted the levels and put more red in....

Only slightly.
