I have just bought a 2nd hand GITZO basalt G1297 and looking at the photos of it online i think there maybe a small disk missing. can anyone tell me if there is or not.

Also i need to get a head for it but have no idea what one to go for. I have been using a ball head on my Manfrotto which i get on with well, so i think one of the ball heads would be best but which one.

Ive been looking at both the G1736M and the G1378M.

any advice or experience with GITZO heads?

I would say you are missing the small base disc, as for head why not use the one you already have, you dont have to go Gitzo, I use an RRS BH-55 LR review in review section, on my G1348mk2.

What he said :) , i use a Kirk BH-1 and Wimberley Mk2 on my Gitzo tripod. Does look like you are missing the base plate but a Gitzo supplier should be able to provide one of those if its needed.

It looks like you have a circular mounting plate around 2" in diameter missing there Tank. Probably not essential, but easy enough to get a spare I'd think.

I have a Gitzo 1178M QR ball head with three separate mounting plates. I don't use it that much as I'm usually using the long lens on the gimbal head. It's magnesium though, very light and well engineered. The only thing it's missing is a separate pan function which would probably be preferable.
