Welcome to the 2011 Talk|Photography Photographer Of The Year Competition.
Sponsored By: Vision Graphix
http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/../images/externallogos/banners/vision_graphix_460x68.gif (http://www.visiongraphix.co.uk/)
Vision Graphix will provide a print of the winning image for the winner each month
This year, the themes are designed to make you think, to encourage the imagination.
The deadline for entries is the 11:59pm on the last day of the month, shortly after that a POLL will be made for you to vote for you favourite entries that month. This process will then repeat each month with a leader board being published after each round. The winner of each month will receive a prize (this will be announced each month). The member with the most votes at the end of the year will win the coveted TP POTY Trophy.
So on with the competition;
The theme for May is:
'ROUND MY WAY'
Wherever you lay your hat. The good, the bad or the downright ugly!

well i never expected that... but then again... i don't think anyone will be predicting the themes this year.
round my way....hmmmmm..... toughest one so far methinks
I like the idea of this one but wonder how far away from my front door people would class as around my way?

that's it, isn't it... half a hour's walk? 45 minutes on a pushbike? a hour's drive? Or just get around it alltogether and say "It's my spiritual home" or some other claptrap

I think I may have had an idea for this one already. (whether it can work as well in reality as it does in my head is another matter.) - But at least THIS time I have something to work towards. :)

I can't help thinking the theme and sub header is saying - get a picture of the local tramp/dosser
....and the Paul Young 'Wherever i lay my hat is my home' song (used to know his nephew incidentally when i lived in Luton)

just banging my head again....
I have an idea in my head, it just boils down to wether I can pull it off or not.
By the way, just for clarification. Can photo's for round 5 be shot after the 12th of April?

I thought it was any time after the announcement (as in 8/4/2011 @ 22:27) , right through to 23:59:59 on 31/05/2011 (though you'd do well to get it uploaded before 00:00:00 obviously )

I must be making random numbers up in my head then :bonk:
So I could shoot it now then and upload it once the "entries" thread is created.

That's the idea so long as it was taken after the announcement of the theme, the idea is to make people go out and take a shot for the competition rather than just sticking in a photo they alreay have that fit's.

I thought the image had to be taken in the month the competition corresponds to! maybe i am wrong!
The image must be taken after the theme is announced.
Just for clarity
The aim of the competition is to improve your photography. Therefore photos must be taken specifically for the competition and must be taken after the theme is announced.

Quick - go shoot a good one, and email me some of the ideas you had left over, because i've drawn a big flat blank on this one!
I was hoping that after "Going Cheesey Early" in April, I'd have almost 2 months to come up with something and get it shot, but so far, I'm nearly 3 weeks from the announcement, and haven't even got a scooby what to try and work towards. Miserable sods around here aren't even having any street parties or stuff like that I could swallow my aversion :gag: to people 'togging and get a snap of :bang:

TBH I've got the opposite problem Newcastle Quayside with its famous bridges and the sage the Angle of the North, St Mary’s Lighthouse the beautiful Northumberland coastline with its many historic castles and the wonderful Cheviot Hills all within spitting distance and certainly what I would call local to me.
The thing is they have all been shot so many times it’s going to be hard to come up with something that’s new and hasn’t been done to death before hand.

I spent an "entertaining" hour or so this morning on the beach, setting my 300D to long exposure and then spinning it round on the tripod head to try and get a sort of circular blur ending in a decent pic type motiff being round, my way - ended up with a pile of blurry poop - back to the drawing board me thinks
(incidentally the reason i was using the 300D is its expendable - no way i'm spinning my 20D arround and risking it falling over into the sea )

Sorry. Always wanted to try one and saw this as a justifiable excuse!
Was actually out this morning shooting for my four seasons project and this idea came to me whilst walking home. Spent too long procrastinating over the April round so was determined not to do the same for May, especially as it is coursework and exam marking season.
I had fun trying to make this work and kind of like the result.

 no need for Sorry's - it's a twist that i'd considered myself, but I couldn't actually think of anything nearby to base it on.
Fortunately, or otherwise, There is not very much in my village bar a shed load of fields.
I also see I am not the only one to have this idea; another mini planet just flew into orbit!

LoL, there'll probably be another one in before long too... I've been thinking about one of these for weeks, and i'll probably end up submitting one if I don't find a better idea!
Nooo, grrrr. Now I have to think of something else. I wouldn't care but I had one done but thought I'd try for something else today.
Bah! ;)
Well yes, it's hard to take something that fits the bill, but with so many excellent entries it's even more difficult trying to pull off something that's worthy of competing. :(:bang: I'm beginning to think I'll never take anything good enough:shake::sulk:

Sorry spooky I had done 2 mini planets this month, one image was taken before the comp but once we know what it was i tried out the process to see if it work and then took one on the 19th when I got the clouds just right so I just had to post it. I had been holding off doing it. I don't think we will be the only little planets this month. Looking forward to see all the other ideas

Not a problem - I kind of thought I would not be alone in this line of thinking. Really like yours - have only visited Pompey a couple of times but have always been struck by the skyline on the waterfront - the tower is especially striking.
I love the way the clouds in your image make the mini planet look like a marble.
All the best

I did some shots at the weekend specifically for this challenge. I'm not really that happy with the results at the moment :( Still, at least I have a while to come up with an alternative.
So, I have a good idea however it'll involve a helicopter and a pilots license... Can anyone help me out please? :D

Well - it kind of depends - the option to save the exif is on a pulldown, which may or may not be set correctly. You may be surprised at how many people overlooked this earlier in the year.

 I managed to get myself the nickname of EXIF Nazi for the first couple of months for all my harping on about it! Still, eventually most people have got things sussed, or come up with workarounds and/or alternative solutions.
The only time Exif data is lost for me is if I produce a HDR using Dynamic Photo HDR 4, then the Exif data is stripped completely apart from the took by date!

Planet was done in PS.
1. Basic tidy of image - straightened horizons and ensured the left and right hand edges mirrored each other. This involved a little cloning and reversing of layers. (This was the time consuming bit)
2. Resize image to make it square (uncheck the constrain proportions box) I made the width match the height.
3. Flip the image vertically.
4. Filter / Distort / Polar Co-ordinates (check rectangular to polar) and hit OK
5. A bit of fine tuning where the join is - clone or healing brush
Hey Presto! A mini planet
I had a couple of trial and errors at this, mainly going back to the original to tweak the left and right hand edges to make them marry up but was surprised at how simple it was.
Cheers

When at this stage:-Filter / Distort / Polar Co-ordinates (check rectangular to polar) and hit OK
If you find that this is not selectable make sure the image is in 8bit mode

Well - I'm finally in for this month. Shot 4 rolls of film on Wednesday, and it's taken until now to get them all developed scanned and publication ready. Wouldn't you know it, but the shot I was hoping/waiting for was on the last roll of the 4 that I souped
Apologies to anyone who checks the EXIF - the date stamping function of FilmTagger (http://codingbythesea.com/?page_id=11) does not seem to extend to adding a time-stamp - so... it appears I took the shot at midnight, whereas it was actually somewhere nearer 16:00

Time to get your entries in people - deadline's midnight tonight, and nearly half the top 30 entrants YTD haven't got a shot in yet. So - for the "leaders" don't miss out and drop down the chart, and for everyone else - hurry up and get a shot in, it could be your chance to gain a few places on the others

Just managed to get mine in not my original idea but i didn't get a chance for that one so never mind :)
Oh thank god, I got mine in. I honestly thought I wasn't going to do one this month because I had NO idea. However, this morning I thought it was June then realised it wasn't and thought perhaps I could dive in with another last gasp effort. I am half an hour early though.
The picture was taken yesterday at my photography class. We were wandering about the area looking for things to shoot and we were pestered by a group of teens who wanted us to photograph them. We agreed if they showed us their skills on the skate park. It wasn't until this morning that it struck me that 'round my way' was about community and street photography and the stuff I'd been doing last night would fit the theme.
Wow, saved by the bell. I actually like this picture too - which is a bonus!
