Came across this site Link (http://www.lostamerica.com/index.html) and i loved the effects on the pics with the lighting.

i have done a few search's for the 'gel strobe flashes' and have come up with nothing.

Are these something that only professional's use.

the reason i am asking is i am thinking of buying an SB800 flash gun for my nikon D50 but i don't wanna spend that money if i can spend it on one of these gel flash guns instead.

Thanks in advance.

Gels are just coloured acetate or sometimes hard plastic sheets with fit in front of your flash head to give a light of a given colour. You should be able to source a variety of suitable stuff in several colours with a Google search. It's easy enough to adapt and fasten them to any flash head with Velcro pads which you can get at places like B&Q, so I wouldn't cancel your SB800. ;)

There's some cool pics in that link of yours but some of them have been done with a single flashgun with a gel of one colour and a simple flashlight (torch) with a gel of another colour to produce the effect, so a bit of ingenuity and imagination is all that's required.

I do see why you like the shots though. :)

:agree: ... some really interesting and unusual effects on the linky ... ... all very well if you are into effects ... ... that said I do really like some of them ... :D

And the method has now been revealed by CT ... :suspect: ... ingenuity eh ... ... ingenious ... ;)

I've just remembered - I have some of these - orange, green and red I think. They don't fit any flashgun I currently have and I've had them that long I'm buggered if I can remember where/ when I got them.

I could take my own advice though and Velcro 'em. :D

Hmmmmm.

I used to go to my local stationers and buy OHP acetate cells in different colours. They are very cheap, and you can get about 20 gels to a sheet.

OK, I'm a cheapskate, but they work!

There was an piece about this in EOS magazine a few issues ago "Painting By Light"

For the gels , do a search for Roscolux gel sample swatch book. They do a pack with what I guess is several hundred gels on various colours and colour temperature altering gels.

They are just the right size for a 580ex flash and they are free too :) Took several weeks for mine to arrive, but some folk seem to get them in a few days.

You might have a long wait for the swatch books. They've got wise to us flashers getting the swatched and buying nothing else. I know of a lot of people who've given up with waiting and just gone out and bought the purpose made packs.
