View Full Version : DSLR Newbie
Hi all, first post here. I'm 17 and got my first DSLR (Nikon D40 w/ 18-55mm kit lens) last week. Below are a few pics from what I've done so far...check out the flickr in my sig for more.
Thanks :)

I particularly like the composition of the 3rd one:thumbs:, but the sepia (if thats what it is) mask on the sky is a bit overdone for my tastes.
I think the 1st one was probably very difficult to meter acurately due to the harsh sunlight on the lane and the shadow in the trees. TBH I don't know if I could have done much better - maybe try adjusting the levels in PS
Keep 'em coming though :)

Kevin,
I had a look at your flickr gallery....
Interestingly, the quality of your macro/closeups are far better than your landscapes....I'm not sure why this would be as it's usually the opposite and inexperienced folk find it more difficult to compose and shoot macro at the start.
Some of those shots are quite good for a zoom that isn't strictly a macro lens.

The second one really appeals to me for some reason. Dunno why - but I like it :)
Thanks for the comments :)
The "sepia" tone on #3 is an experiment with a brown-to-clear gradient in Picasa (I'll get to grips with Photoshop in time!) that's meant to simulate a gradient filter, similar to this (http://www.cokin.co.uk/pages/grad6.htm). I'm a real fan of the effects, I'm hoping to pick up some real filters soon. #1 was taken in a lane surrounded by bushes and trees under very harsh, midday sun, which explains the metering.
In all honesty, I'm much more fond of the macro stuff I've done also. The feedback I've had from others has been much more positive on the landscape pics, however, so I wanted some advice. #3 is my favourite of the ones I posted.
Thanks again everyone, keep the comments coming!

Hey buddy, the last two are my favourite!
I like #2 in particular!
I am also 17 and have only had my camera for around 3 weeks/1 month!
Good to know im not the only one here!
Nice shots though mate :)

No1 would be so much better if you had been there late in the evening or early morning as then the light would've been filtering through the trees creating interest and not washng the scene out. Compositionaly it's very good. It's just the lighting that lets it down.
The filter is a bit strong on the last one. I'm not sure about Picasa but in photoshop you can alter the way the colour blends with the image and then it's amount. If you tone it down a bit it would be a much better shot.
