View Full Version : Southern Hawker & Common Darter
I went down to my local nature reserve armed with my
Tamron 90mm and flash, everything else was left at home.
I went looking for insects and I found plenty, the only
problem was, they wouldn't keep still.
I eventually had this large chap land right next to me in a
tree I was stood next to. I watched him for ages and was
amazed with its eyes. You can't tell in the picture, but its
eyes are translucent. The colour you can see comes
through from its Head.

That is seriously good stuff Matt ... ... flash you say ... :suspect: ... is that macro flash or normal flash head ...
Would flash not give you the chance to increase DoF any more ...
:p
Really nice. I only have on-camera flash. Is it any use for macro?
Thanks Ven, Ian, Greg.
Flash was 580ex with stoffen attached set to -1ev.
Helps reduce the harsh shadows caused by bright sunlight.
Very nice shot, the 580ex gives good results on macro stuff
Would flash not give you the chance to increase DoF any more ...
Ven, I was using the available light for the shot.
I only used the flash for fill to soften the shadows.
Increasing the DoF would have meant a longer exposer
using the available light.
If I had used the flash to light the scene, the background
will have been dark, with an unsightly mishmash of green
and black caused by the leaves and shadows.
Hope I've managed to answer your question ;)

Rather good with your pet dragons aren't you Matt ... ;)
And yes, thank you ... ... question admirably answered ... :D
:p
Its nice when you can find some that will sit still long enough for you to get close ;)
Some of them let you get that close, they're sitting on your head, shoulders, arms and back,
Here's a closer look at the hawkers eyes.

Nice shots Matt. Come Hell or high water I'm getting out and about next week - I'm going stir crazy. :cuckoo:
I know how you feel.
Gigrin was my first outing this year, so it made a refreshing change.
