View Full Version : FAQ: Why can't I access the Classifieds / For Sale / Wanted?
Those members of the forum that have been here for at least 60 days and contributed 25 posts can see and use the classified sales section of the TP site.
If you check out the rules link on the help menu you will see there are plenty of rules for using the classifieds. The rules are there to try and keep trading as straight forward and as safe as possible. Having gone to the trouble of setting all those rules and the constant workload of policing the classifieds it will come as no surprise that access is restricted to those that have shown themselves to be genuine forum members and not here just to sell something and run or to bag a bargain.
If you have made 25 posts and been here 60 days then the forum software will automatically change your privileges to allow access to the classifieds. The 'upgrade' routine runs at intervals - it is not instant on reaching 25 posts. Expect to wait a few hours at most.
The site staff with help from keen eyed members do notice those trying to abuse the system. Make 15 posts a day for 2 days only and you will be spotted. Make lots of simple 'nice shot' type posts and you will be spotted.... You get the idea.
Once identified as someone that is posting with the sole motivation of getting classifieds access Admin take action to stop automatic promotion of privileges and you will not get access. If you feel like using the contact us link to apologise and then spend a month or so proving you can be a genuine member you can ask again via 'contact us' to have your access reconsidered.
When you do get access to the classifieds section you will probably want to keep having access. Breaking the rules (none of which are unreasonable) is a way to get yourself warned and then excluded if you carry on. Do read the classifieds rules from the help menu and also be sure to read the thread at the head of the classifieds section giving guidance for safe trading and detailing how the classifieds section is a benefit not to be misused or used exclusively without participating elsewhere in the forum.
I don't get involved personally with the classifieds very often so don't contact me if you have a query. Reply to this thread or use the 'contact us' link at the bottom of every page which creates a message all staff can see.

No the entry requirements are hardly major but there for a reason.
Only aware of the forum last week, been a member on avforums for a few years with good feedback, was interested in looking at the classifieds, but need 25 posts, never mind.

I was a moderator on another classified forum where i sold hundreds of items, been a member of loads of forums and never had to have 25 posts to view a classified section. I have 100% ebay feedback selling over 1000 items but it makes no difference. Its not hard to hit 25 posts but i feel wary posting as it makes me wonder if people think im doing it to get my post count up so i dont bother (did you see what i did there ;)).

its 25 posts and 60 days membership so it isnt easy (or possible) to spam yourself too
and the rationale is that the clasified are a perk for contributing members not a raison d etre of the site - therefore anybody who can't be arsed to make at least 25 decent posts, or to wait 60 days isnt really a contributing member so don't get the perks - simples

As you have 60 days it is less than 1 post every 2 days so not an issue.

I guess on balance, but nothing to back this up with,
There is a high percentage of males to females on TP,
but I wouldn't mind betting, pro rata, that there is not a lot in it ;)

Anyhow I do feel that the classified section is just a little safer when it is just that bit harder to get access to it - if anybody and everybody could gain access immediately then you could get scammers popping up under different names all the time.

Thats (mostly) the idea behind it.
And too many people were dropping in, snapping up a bargain,
never to be seen again.

The 25 posts is not at all extreme but unfortunately other people have caused issues which have made the 60 day rule.
maybe extreme was a bit .. extreme haha :)

Leaving aside the fact that you can't post in the classified until you have 25 posts and 60 days membership , they are for selling stuff - if you arent selling stuff or buying stuff don't put it in the classifieds - simples
I'd suggest asking in talk business if you want to pay to have it taken - or in general photographic discussion if you are hopibg for a freebie.
you might also want to read the rules regarding "asking for a photographer" to make sure you arent going to transgress them

Well you cannot post in classifides yet, there is a minimum criteria to be met.
But try a thread in the Talk Photography (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=19) forum. You will need to be very specific in what you ask for.

your join date is recorded as 18-1-12 , its currently 10-3-12, thats 52 days , so by my reckoning you should be able to access classifieds the monday after next

Good point - not to worry though I'm on now and I'm a lot more "into" my photography than I was back then so I'm sure 60 days will pass without even thinking about it :thumbs:

And just a reminder that the rules are 25 posts and 60 days membership so if you haven't been here for more than 60 days and made 25 good, meaningful posts (not the copy and paste type "Nice Shot") then you will not have access
Don't forget that the classifieds are a perk for contributing members.

yeah but this is a forum - not a shop , making comments is what its about so you are probably in the wrong place ( suggest ebay might suit you better)
The genuine members who also want to buy and sell would probably rather trade with people they've got to know and trust , rather than someone who's only interest is buying and selling.
the only shame is the some people seem incapable of reading the rules and then abiding by them.

I have finally saved up enough money to buy a second hand camera so really want to see if anyone can offer me a decent deal to set me up with something nice that I can afford ... and hey, you won't let me even try!
It seems a bit tight to hamper newcomers in this way ... I thought that buying a camera from a site like this might be safer than going somewhere where i might more easily be ripped off ... because you're all enthusiasts here.
But it seems I'm not allowed to even have a look. All because I am new :(

that bit is true - but the reason its true is because only contribuiting members are allowed to trade , so buyers and sellers don't get ripped off by people who only come to trade and hit and run
I'd suggest that it wouldnt hurt to be a member for 60 days before you buy a camera as the 'waiting' time could be spent learning more about what you want to buy.
However if you really can't wait 60 days i'd suggest having a look at MPB photographic - they have a good rep, won't rip you off , and their prices arent much higher than those found in our classifieds

It's very fair to be honest, I'm waiting to get into the marketplace as I've just got a 550D so am new to the Photography scene, but I've seen and know of other forums that have MUCH stricter entry rules so to be honest this is pretty fair.

btw while you wait out your 60 day probation (if you're addicted i'm guess 25 posts isnt going to be a problem ;) ) I'd highly reccomend MPB Photographic as a great place to buy used canon kit at a decent price

probably because you are only just over the sixty day limit and the system sometimes takes a few days to adjust.
Also bear in mind that all the admin staff are off getting legless and eating curry proffesionally networking at the convention so if it requires a manual approval they might not be able to do it until monday
Some reason I can't view the classifieds?
Looks like this is your first visit since January when you were too new to see them. As per post #1 in this thread, give the server a couple of hours to run its next check for upgrades to accounts
