I took this shot on my garden pond last week.
Any advice and criticism is most welcome, as macro photography is new to me.

Lovely shot, I like the way the antenna are sharp in the reflection. I don't have these on my pond but have Water Measurers. I've been told you have one or the other as the pondskaters eat Water Measurers :-)

more or less what I was about to type. :)

Excellent. Shame the reflection is sharper than the insect itself, but thats only a minor thing! Love the colours, especially around its feet!

oh wow, the colours! I would be a happy bunny if I had taken that shot. :)
Fantastic shot, the colours are spot on. There is one thing that is bugging me though. At the top, right in the middle of the image there is something catching my eye, im not sure if its a spec of dust or watter on the lens. There is also one on the bottom right of the shot. Above its left leg there is also something that i would take out which i think would make the shot look a lot smoother IMO.

Fantastic shot Cedarapple, little bit of careful cloning on those spots and print it IMO.
water measurers?
Do you all mean the things that hang upside down in cattle troughs and the like?
I always thought they were water boatmen!
anyway, digression.
lovely shot and very jealous!

Wow, thanks for all the encouraging comments.
I will go over the pic with the clone tool and clean it up.
I did try a number of different crops of this, but wasn't happy with any of them as I like the colours in the water, and the photo loses something without these. Anyone is welcome to show me how this could be framed better.
Thanks again everyone - comments like this keep me going.
It did occur to me tht this would have made a decent entry for the last 2 comps (reflect and living creatures?), but I was away over the weekend, and forgot to enter it.:(

I like it just the way it is, the insect has space to move into which makes for a good composition.

Agreed. I dont really see how a crop would improve it!
No offence, but I think a few of us are quite happy you forgot to enter pic of the month :D
I like that shot Phil, very nicely captured & great colours - just need to tidy up the cloned areas as they are very obvious on my monitor
