Dude, you should seriously try to make a 'bouncing diffuser' from aluminium foil, I've tried it just yesterday on the dullest subjects, it's better than direct flash, but depends a lot on how you shape the light returning part.
Make sure the cut is smooth, else it'll tear in no time.
