Hers is one I did a few months ago, I really got hammered by some folks on the flag use.......(apparently there are certain ways you can use an American flag) However, flag aside, I'd really like to know what you all think about the pic itself????

Thanks!!!

Hi Heather.
I love the composition and subject of this shot.

I don't know much about photography I am fairly new to it, but maybe the shadows on the arm could be dodged out a bit?

PS..Since when can the American flag not be used to protect one of its citizens? lol

I think this is a lovely shot - very different to how you normally see the 'star spanged banner'.

After several visits to USA, it always amazes me how proud the Americans are of their flag. It is displayed everywhere - schools, houses, offices, etc. In some schools, they even have a morning assembly raising the flag and singing the national anthem. National pride. If we did that in this country we'd all be sued for being discriminatory !!!!

AnthNot where I'm from matey :) I have regularly flown my Welsh flag outside my house. But I could certainly tell you a few stories about being discriminated against if you wish - though in another thread.

I even took it to work with me once when I was working for a client in Oxford - placed a huge Welsh flag on my desk on one of the rare occasions when Wales did well at rugby - the year we won the Six Nations Grand Slam.:)

Looking at the eyes, I'm think that the child looks frightened, so for me it doesn't work. Sorry.

They're hardly bullet proof ;) I do like this shot and since we don't have patriotism in the UK it works just fine :)

I actually like it too, just not sure of the meaning of it...? Is it a patriotic image, or an image of a baby, or both...?

Lovely composition - but I have to agree with Photostar 1, that I feel a little uneasy about the eye and the way the babe appears to be clutching the flag. Maybe, if the corner of the mouth was visible to show a bit of the child's emotional state (I am imagining a quivvering lip) it would work better - bless, he/she looks terrified. A little dodging around the mouth, and inner arms would certainly help. All in my opinion of course. Other than that, this image is as sharp as a pin. Look forward to seeing more of your work. Well Done:clap::)

Thank you very much everyone, thats exactly what I needed!!!!!

TheMusicMan-This image was taken for her brother, (19 years between the two) who is stationed in Korea, and it was her 6 month pics, so it was a both :)

Photostar 1 and Gilly-she probably was scared, LOL, she had just fallen over and tangled herself up in the flag, this was a lucky shot.......Or unlucky depending on if you like it or not LOL :) Thank you both for being honest, its very much appreciated!

torque22, magpieant, CT and petemc-thank you all for your lovely comments! That is also very much appreciated! Actually there is a HUGE list of stuff that your not allowed to do with an American flag, that I didnt know about until a few military people looked at it. Apparently your not allowed to *wrap* anything in a flag????

I really like it, the image to me portrays the protection a nation can (when it wants to) give its citizens.

For me though the most redeeming element of this image is the way Red, White and Blue in the flag match the Red/white skin areas and the blue eyes of the child.

Very nice.

I think the kid is hiding a little smile behind the flag actually, It really works well for me, even the shadows. Wish I had taken it.
As for use/misuse of the SSB, nonsense... I think it perfectly portrays the patriotism it's meant to in this case. As is noted above I regret that we as a nation cannot be the same.
