Managed to grab the end of a street band in glorious southampton yesterday - the banjo guy was screaming to be photographed.
on first glance, I really liked this shot, but after having looked again, I think it could benefit from a shallower DoF. Any C&C/alterations welcome :)

Nice shot, although I agree - it's a shame about the bg being a bit busy and detracting somewhat. On the other hand of course, the bg detail shows more of the surroundings and atmosphere in the street, so it's a case of personal taste really. :)

Yes, as a capture of what was happening, its ok. Agree it would have been better with a shallower DoF, but ......a bit of gaussian blur should sort that! ;)
I agree with the others. Lovely colours though.

thanks for the comments guys. glad I managed to pick up on the main thing that could've been done to improve it :)
my main thing with street photography is having the confidence to walk up to people and take photos. I'm going to start asking people if I can take their photos to try and boost my confidence! it'll also be nice when I get my 70-200mm VR :D
Pfft. 70-200 is cheating. 24-70 is where its at but of course its very up close and personal.

yeah, it'll convince me to stop being such a wuss. I seem to remember you saying a while ago that it was a problem you'd had, but I guess I'll just start asking pretty girls if they want their pictures taken! :D (this also seems to be what you do :p)
the 70-200 would serve as a good gig lens though - and with a teleconverter it'd be nice for wildlife and motorsport if I can get into that too!
edit: played with this one as well - I think the background is less distracting here, but the DoF is still off, and I could've gotten closer

Had a quick play, VERY quick.
Just select the bloke, inverted selection, feathered 2 pixels and gaussian blur about 2pix, very rough and ready but you get the idea. Really nice pic btw

thanks very much :)
If I was going to blur it, I'd have done it behind the equipment as I think that gives the wrong impression of the depth and separates him too much - but the blur effect you've produced is spot on! thanks for taking the time :)
