2 photographs from my first outing with a £2 piece of glass. I'm fairly happy with the results. The glass was affixed to an old UV filter ring and rimmed with blutack to keep the light from seeping in.

Looking good.
Use Cokin 'P' square holder could be even simpler, what is the thickness of the welding glass?

Thank you. The glass is quite thick. I have a holder but it wouldn't slide into it. I'm thinking that it's more than the 10 stop mark due to the length in exposures I had to use to get those two photographs.

I love the first one ! i feel daft spending £100 on a ND110 filter now...

Love the first one. The upper corners on a first though look more noisier than the second one (to me at least).

Thanks. I might try and run them through some noise reduction software and see what effect that has.

I tried that, but it lets light in behind the glass. I now have the glass blutacked to a Cokin filter holder ring.

what if to take out a pair of slot divider , or two? IMO Getting a cheap holder and slot it looked slick than the £100 one or blue tack solution.

Which grade of the welding lens you used? I found there are from grade 8 to 12 (grade 8 being the lightest)

And what material? mainly I am thinking how easy/difficult to cut it.

Just ordered two after market P holders, £1.15 each. It is a steal.

Last time when I tried it, it fit (a bit tightly but still) in the first Cokin P holder slot - the one where Kokin CPL usually goes. It is a bit thicker than the rest.

Have you tried long exposure NR (where camera subtracts dark frame from the long exposure)? That worked quite well for me with long exposures even though it doubles the exposure time.

Hi Alexey, I've used the NR functionality before but it seems to have two drawbacks, twice the length of time to complete a photograph and also the end result comes out softer than without the NR turned on. I might try it with it on next time though for comparison sake.

Interesting, my experience is the opposite but I'm using Nikon. I do agree that double the exposure time is really frustrating...

mine's around the 13-stop mark, but gives a horrific green tint.
I gave up using it & decided to lurch from the cheapest option to buying a Lee Big Stopper, which is utterly awesome, & has virtually no colour cast.

These are incredible! I absolutely love them. I'd forgotten that I've got some welding glass waiting for me too, best get a move on and pick it up.

very very nice

how did you get one with focussing though as obviously it's waaay to dark to focus with the welding glass on

Thank you :) You should go get it now and head out this weekend.

Thanks a lot :)

You compose the image first, set up your focus and frame. Then based on the exposure readings your camera gives you you can then put your filter on and modify the setting in bulb mode to compensate for the lack of light. Some minor calculations but you can see them if you click the link in my original post.

many thanks, how tricky is attaching the filter without 'knocking' the focus out?

Love the 1st one!

Mine is about 12-stops. I used an iphone app to calculate it! I have mine in a cokin-p holder, I had to wedge it in tightly and then used black electrical tape to seal the edges.

You're meant to shoot raw, then you alter the WB in PP!

I attach it carefully with the lens still on auto- then switch it to manual.
