Allow me to introduce Emma. She was one of the people I asked for a photo for eighthundred. I had just finished my lunch in the lovely setting of St Lukes church. As I was leaving she arrived and looked fantastically cool so I had to get her photo. Besides looking cool she was a very cool person. Whitty, fun, not at all shy. We had to pick 2 photos from our set to get enlarged and this was one of them. Why? Well out of all the people I met that day she stood out the most. Some people were a bit shy about it, others not so much but that was because they were in groups. She was the only single person I photographed that was totally naturally, at ease, and very cool. The Popcultured (http://www.popcultured.co.uk) website has officially gone live now featuring all sorts of cool content from eighthundred (http://popcultured.co.uk/eighthundred.html) to rgb (http://popcultured.co.uk/rgb/index.html).

As I said the 1st time I saw this shot, very nicely done, expression is spot on & she really does look totally at ease. Excellent shot & conversion

An excellent contender for a "my eyes are up here" award. LOL
Great pic mate of a natural looking and pretty girl.

As much as I like it, there's something niggling me about this. And that's whether it would have worked better without her hiding behind the anonymity of the shades. As it stands I think we lose some sort of connect and I keep wondering what is behind them.
Did you ever meet her again by the way, I recall you really wanted her to see her photo in the gallery?
I'm a big fan of shades, I really think they work well on some people. I do appreciate what you're saying as peoples eyes are even nicer to look at but this was her on that day. I didn't meet her no. I met 1 person I photographed since. Bit of a shame but what are the chances?

...this was her on that day.
Interesting, I hadn't considered that angle.

I like this picture, a really nice capture. :)
It would be interesting to see a pic without the sunglasses, and especially those huge style of sunglasses that are popular at the moment. I think that style could date the picture in the future, but I suppose one of the aims of the project would have been to capture the people as they were on that day.
Did you shoot in Raw, and if so is there a colour version? as I would be interested to see the contrast of colours between the young lady and the background.

In my opinion, a smashing image, a wonderfully natural pose and wow - what a smile... I like it a lot. I think it works very well in b&w too.
She is a very pretty girl, and if you could - you ought to make her aware of this thread as I'd guess she could get modeling opportunities from it.
I think this is a great shot, but then I am a huge fan of your work!

Thanks :)

It never occured to me to ask because I thought she looked great as she was. I wouldn't say no to a reshoot without shades.

I did but I've decided to take a firm stance on my shots now. I treat my processing like film. There is no colour version :) It may look better to some in colour, and to others in B&W. Ideally I don't want people saying it looks better in colour. I'm not sure I'm really getting my point across. I'm happy for criticism on the image, but I feel strongly that I need to say its either colour or b&w and not think about whether it would be better in t'other.

I didn't think it would look better in colour, I just wondered how it looked on colour, and how you decided to use that background. Did you do a test shot to see how she stood out from the background, tone wise, or were the colours so dissimilar that you knew it would work?
An interesting stand to take with regards to shooting with the aim of showing pics in B&W, very admirable. Will your colour pics be treated the same way?

The camera was set in B&W all day. I didn't really do a test shot, just took 2 shots and was happy with it. I feel like it could do with more contrast but I never had time to really tweak every shot and I don't feel I should change it now its been exhibited.

Quite possibly. I'm finding I shoot 75% B&W now. Its becoming a lot clearer to me what works when and how best to use it, at least to get the results I want. I'll know at the scene whether its going to be colour or B&W and I'll shoot with that mode on the camera. So when its uploaded here the decision was made a long time ago. Thats not to say I'm totally opposed to critique of course :) I know not everyone likes B&W but I do feel that I need to stick to it.
But if you wanted, could you use the RAW to do a colour version, for instance if you were curious as to how it would look?
Sure I could do that but I dunno. I don't really want to think about whether it looks better in one or the other. I want it to look brilliant and thats it. I want to choose one style and get a brilliant result from that rather than go "Hmmmm colour.... b&w.... colour... b&w...." I'd prefer to understand b&w in depth, and to do that I have to drop colour. I think I'm sounding rather pretentious or something now but basically I'm trying to treat digital like film because they got it right back then.

Nah. I see you point, and it's a good one. Your black and white shots have improved considerably in the time that i've been here, not technically perhaps, but in the way that they pass on a feeling, or message. You do right by the format by giving it your sole attention.
Thanks, that means a lot :)
Huge glasses (and cleavage)
Great capture and conversion. You and B&W are getting along fine
