How much does a lens depreciate by?

Hi ya

I am about to sell a canon lens and replace it with a new one but have no idea about depreciation on a lens. The lens I am selling is the EF-S 17-85 f4-5.6 IS USM retailing new at £359
My lens is a couple of years old and in good condition so I guess it should be worth £200 with the hood. Is that about right?

The new lens is going to be either the EF 24-70mm f2.8 L or EF24-105mm f4 L - My money is on the 1st lens at the mo but I haven’t finished reading reviews and they both seem good. Just need to weigh up the pros and cons. The EF24-70 is fast but my concern is that it is heavy for hand held at slow shutter speeds. Should I be worried???

I currently also use the EF 70-200 f2.8 L (which is fantastic) so the EF24-70mm seems like a good focal length as companion. Or is it better to have a bit of a cross over on zooms if you only have one body?

Any thoughts, yes please.

(Guess I need a wide lens now, but I have no money and they all seem a bit pricy!! :lol:)

It's a Canon lens - worth about as much as a 50p brick!

Canon lenses seem to hold their value very well, especially L glass ones. I suspect you'd get closer to £250 for the 17-85

I used to have a nikon FM1 many years ago (until some nasty person stole it from my locker at art college!) so I do think kindly of Nikons but I now own a Canon 20D and will be buying the 5D as soon as I can and to be honest I think Canon is putting more money into full frame digital cameras so I dream of the 1DS mark III

Have a look at ebay and see how much they're going for there
Its probably the best place to sell it too
I've sold loads of kit on there this year with no problems and everything went for a pretty reasonable price

I paid £260 inc shipping for one from these very forums, it was only a month or so old, but had no hood.

I would say £250 gven that yours is a couple of years old and has a hood, certainly would be a good place to start

A bit of "cross over" is not a bad thing. There are very few zooms that perform brilliantly from short to long. Usually the charts show some fall off in IQ near the limits. Staying away from the last 5-10% helps but not so much on a crop body as they're not using the outer periphery of the image which is where the fall off usually begins.
