On September 21st the QE2 (Queen Elizabeth 2) Ocean Liner visited Liverpool on her 40th anniversary tour. The day started with torrential rain. The rain stopped, the clouds parted and I was on a ferry for what was the best light all day. I am incredibly happy with this photo for many reasons, but mainly because I feel that I’ve come full circle. Back in 1990 I was 11 years old. I had spent 1 day that summer, I memory serves, on a photography day trip. I used a film slr and we wandered around Birkenhead. We got to process our photos in a darkroom, which was pretty cool. The photo appeared by magic. It was my first real taste of photography. I took a photo, that I wish I could find, of Birkenhead Docks in black and white. The guy running the course said it was one of the best he’d seen, though I imagine he was simply being kind to a kid. That same summer the QE2 visited Liverpool for her first time. It was an incredible sight. I’d never seen a ship that size before. My parents and I were down at Wallesey watching it all with some photographer friends. I remember hearing their stories and wanting to be a photographer. They told me of the fabled 500mm lens that could look across the Mersey with such zoom that you could see the individual pieces of the Liver Buildings clock face. I didn’t know till then that it was actually a mosaic. I wanted a 500mm zoom lens from that day on. They told me of the guy panning with planes who fell backwards over his camera bag as they passed overhead. I remember seeing their giant steel cases packed full of gear. Most of all that day stuck in my mind all my life, till I got distracted by computers. Looking back now if there was any one single event that inspired me to be a photographer it was that day.

Over the past few years people have asked me how I got into photography and I’ve said its just been a hobby over the past 4 years that grew. Its always been something I’ve wanted to do all my life as I remember playing with cameras as a kid. My Dad was into photography as well so I’ve always been around them. I miss using my Dad’s Topcon SLR, the thumb action winding the film on, the feel of the lenses. It reminds of me being a kid and I don’t get that from my current DSLR’s. The QE2 visiting has reminded me of all this. I don’t often remember being a kid that much, but this visit has brought it all out. I’ve realised that I’ve always wanted to be a photographer but I got distracted along the way. Now I am a photographer and yesterday I knew I had to get the best ever photo of the QE2 that I could. This is why I am so happy with this photo. It was also taken on my 10D, not my 30D. Totally by accident but quite nice that it was taken on my first DSLR.

Camera: Canon 10D // Lens: Sigma 10-20 // Filter: ND Grad // Focal Length: 10.0mm // Exposure Time: 1/320 // Aperture: f/8.0 // ISO: 200

petemc, its a stunning shot buttttt the building at the after end worries me, when you look down the lines of a vessel it has in my book to balance, the building I am afraid for me distracts. Maybe someone else would like to comment. I might sound a little picky but ships have played a huge part in my life and images of a lot of them are imprinted on my brain. Regards Jim

I hadnt spotted that building till you mentioned it Jim. My brain had just taken it as part of the photo, guess it would be more obvious on a larger size. Its a point though.

Overall though cracking shot Pete :) and glad you are happy with it, really shows the boat off well.

Hmm. Annoyingly to remove it would mean that it wasn't an accurate photo of the QE2 in Liverpool in 2007. As I was on a ferry at the time I didn't have much choice in things. It wouldn't be hard to remove, but I'm not sure that I should.

Well, how about saving the original working on a ps one and reposting it to see what people think? Just an idea, you may be busy etc. Regards Jim

It's not the time taken (I wouldn't imagine), but rather the fact that this isn't a photo of the QE2, it's a photo of the QE2 in Liverpool :).

Indeed. I don't doubt that it would be better without that building, but it would also be technically incorrect then. I only play with light in my photos, I don't edit things to that degree. A telephone wire, a random bit of dirt or small things. An entire building though, for me, its pushing it a bit. I appreciate that the image is more on the art side than factual reproduction too.

Yes I see your point and its quite valid, but if you look at the for end of the vessel and it shouts Liverpool, that landing stage has featured in more ship shots than most. I think I am looking at it more from the beauty of the ship than the fact that its in Liverpool. I can see what pete says it would not be a true representation if he were to work on it, but I can only really explain it thus, if this shot was for sale with the building in it and out of it for me no contest but as I said at the start I am into ships. Regards Jim

Thats not the landing stage at the back. Its a new building.

That one. I completely agree that it should be removed to make the picture more asthetically pleasing. I am planning on selling it too. However, I'm not entirely sure that I should remove the building. It doesn't feel right to do so.

Very strong images Pete, the pair of these - now don't hit me, but what really stands out is that these both have the feel of actually having strong light, not faux pp'ed 'strong light'.
You have earned the right to beam for a time :)

Oh. Um, I'm not sure now which bit you think should be removed :)

Thanks :) I'm hoping to get it into a gallery when they launch in the next few weeks.

I completely 100% agree. I've tried HDR images with the wrong light and as you'd expect they're rubbish. Just like with any photo, its all about good light.

Great shots, they have a strong colour feel to them and the dynamic range looks to be extended in them.:thumbs:

Fantastic picture. I also hadn't noticed the leaning building until it was pointed out. For me it doesn't cause too much of a distraction. Well done.

An absolute stunner there Pete, you are back to your best again - great shot. Personally, the building does not cause a problem for me either.

Didn't manage to get up there on Friday, which was a shame. Then again, even if I had, I'd probably only be gutted that I couldn't take a photo as good as yours !!!! ;)

Weel done mate.

You didn't have a BW CF loaded that day then? ;)

Photo's good though, I like it. Shame the weather earlier on was rubbish, but glad it cleared up later. I had a walk down by the landing stage in the afternoon, but was too ill to even think about taking a camera. A shame really, as 'she' won't be back here again...

Hi Pete,
Love the story. The shot is great, was one of my favorite vessels. However since new ones have been built. I'd still like to go on a cruise on the QE2. My first photos were also of transport and boats (ferrys at Dover) with my 126 film and kodak camera, Ah the joys of a young lad at 8-10.
