View Full Version : My first attempt at panning
Thanks to some of the advice given on here I had a go at panning today, I think they have come out okish for a first attempt, but lots of pictures came out blurred and not in focus at all :( I took about 560 pictures and maybe deleted about 200.
Here is a pick of some of what I thought came out ok....

marvellous
whatever your technique is - it works
the target is sharp and the background is nicely blurred
11/10!
Not a bad start mate, take practice, lots pf practice, unless your very lucky.
Thanks again and as you say lots and lots of practice.

they look very good, the 3rd one down is a little oversharpened IMHO.
a very good start anyway, you might want to start cropping a litle tighter in on the cars :)

The pictures are straight from the camera I have not done anything to them yet :)
That's the problem I was having the standard lens did not get close enough as the first 3 pictures show and the other lens I have was a bit to close at times, I think I need an in between lens :)

me too, ive only got 2 zooms and id really like something that covers the missing middle bit and goes a bit further, something like a 24-105mm would do the job for my rally stuff, shame its i dont have any money!

if thats your first time at panning, i'd say you should be happy with that.

Yes it is and yes I am :)
Thanks, just a bit down hearted that quite a few came out not in focus but I guess it all takes time.

the bin rate will fall, on another note, as pointed out they are oversharpened a tad, but as you say you havent sharpened them then you'l need to reduce the sharpening effect on the picture mode in the camera.

I'd agree that they have something of the type of effect that you get from oversharpening, but it could be all sorts of things that have caused it.
However, that aside, I think you've done really well for you first time out panning!
The Seat in the first shot is probably my favourite, just because I think the colours work well. Perhaps a little tigther would be better, but next time you will be ready and armed with your new skill!
Thanks again everyone, I checked the setting on the camera and it was set on sharp not normal so will change that ready :)
Excellent set for your first attempt.
As for the bin rate, I wouldn't worry about it. I usually take over 1000 shots over a weekend motoring event, and I'll bin probably 750 of those. Admittedly I do tend to use Continuous Shot mode quite a bit now, which doesn't help the bin rate.
As with so many things in life, practice is the only way you'll improve. Do you have any other events lined up?
if these are your first go at panning, you have done a great job:thumbs:
well done.can't wait for the next set
Thanks again everyone. I have sorted a couple more from the Sunday

Some super shots there, great first effort. The closer cropped images seem to have more 'punch' than the first 3 original submissions which appeared to drag the subject into the vastness of blurred background IMO. All nice frozen subjects though, well done.

your hitrate will improve with experience, the first few times i would perhaps get 50 shots i was happy with out of 1000, the last time i went shooting i got perhaps 600 that i was happy with so for once i had the choice of which shot of a car to keep rather than being stuck to the only one thats sharp and in focus. some of the latter group of pics you've posted are superb!
Pretty damned good for a 1st attempt
I love the 2 MKI Escorts (Works? and Mexico)
The Morgan aint arf bad neither
Thanks again everyone for the advice.
pretty good shots - just be careful about the framing of the cars now - the panning is spot on though.

Being a bit dense when you say "framing" do you mean where the car is in the picture, ie left or right or centre or do you mean the frames I have used round the picture?
I know it's a silly question but if I am not sure I would rather get it right next time
no such thing as a silly question!
yes - sometimes the nose of the car is too far over - the car should always be driving into the picture. Tricky to do with a fast moving subject! Hope that's clear - not always easy to put into words!

Not exactly a panning shot but I love the one of the yellow car behind the green. I did think it was a shame the green car isn't fully in the frame but then i guess you could say it represents the green car pulling away!!
Anyway, brilliant shots all round.

Makes perfect sense now, thanks :)
Nice shots, wish my first panning attempts had come out like this. Especially like the 2nd beemer in the second set.
Not sure I subscribe to this - but I did read somewhere once (from an 'expert') that panning shots should 'always' be left to right as apparently that's the way the brain expects things to move - although I'm guessing thats from a right handed person. However thats said to me there is something a little more comfortable with the jag and morgan (2 and 3) rather than the last beemer is that down to direction or just the shots.
What's anybody else's thoughts. I usually take shots both ways just depends what side of the circuit I'm on.

Thanks for the comments, I never really thought about the left to right thing, but having had another look since reading I can see what you mean, the cars look more normal (if that's the right word) than going the other way. I wonder is it because when we cross the road the cars are going in the that direction. Ie in from the right out to the left?? Or have I grasped the wrong conception altogether. :)

Re the left to right thing, few tracks have much in the way of access *inside* of the course for mere mortals, so unless your circuit runs anti-clockwise you are kinda limited ;-)
Greatpics. I really likes Turky's BMW and the MG chasing the Aston.
I recently tried panning shots at Renault World Series (Donnington) but they are nothig like as good as yours. Think I was too far away (so used a 200mm lense) and the light wasn't great.
If this was my first effort I'd be very happy.
Stu.
P.S I remember reading in a mag about simple background (like the BMW shot) is less distracting.
