Low Budget: £ 200 or less
- Sigma 70-300 APO

Mid Budget: £ 500 - £ 750
- Sigma 100-300 f4 EX
- Canon 70-200 f4 L
& optional x1.4 TC

High Budget: £ 1000+
- Canon 100-400 L
- Sigma 120-300 EX f2.8
- fast primes

I bought a secondhand Sigma 100-300 f4 and am delighted with it.

If you don't mind buying from Overseas, One Stop Digital has it for £ 508.99 including free shipping and promise to refund VAT if you get charged it upon entry. Its quite a big heavy lens, so you may want to buy a monopod with your saving...
