I bought a lens from Moomike which I will thank him for looking after for me and keeping as new!. It arrived just in time to catch the only event left on my daughters eventing calendar and the first I have attended due to being chaperone to my biking son.

Firstly I must say that I found looking through such a long fixed lens as a challenge to my sense of scale. Where to stand?!

Anyway a few lessons learned (a euphemism for me mucking it up more than once) and happily one or two shots which might make it to print.

#1
Kerry in her dressage test. I had limited place to go as there was a bad background on one side, another arena on another and where I thought was best I was asked NOT TO by my daughter (go figure!)

#6 This is where the long lens caught me out. I never swapped to portrait and clipped the bottom, grrrr!

So I doff my cap to Hacker and the likes that can capture great stuff at this game. It is a tough sport to follow with you having to sortie your spots early on. Might even do it again though :D

That's a good looking horse you've got there! Dressage is never easy to capture as the riders usually like the shots in extended trot or in canter. #4 looks a bit dark, not much detail in the shadows but always a difficult shot with the sky as it is. The rest of the shoots are good, I really like the last one as it shows the power these animals have.

It's not too difficult compared to flying a kite with an engine strapped to your back whilst taking pictures! :D

No problem mate, cheers again

Excellent shots Gary, happy you're enjoying the challenge of super telephoto
Nice & sharp isn't it, you just cannot beat 100% crop views with that lens!
Colin is right, it is such a difficult sport to photograph & you've done excellently for a 1st go (my 1st ones were nowhere near as good as these.)

Really like the 2nd shot, would look great as b&w imo
