The QE2 fireworks display was as usual impressive to watch, and tricky to shoot. We couldn’t move far enough along to frame things nicely. For these I came up with a crazy idea. I used an ND grad over the fireworks to darken them so I could get a brighter exposure on the Liverpool skyline. It worked. In other news I relaunched my portfolio (http://www.petecarr.net) the other day. Its got some great free desktops that I’m sure you’ll all love.

Camera: Canon 30D // Lens: Sigma 10-20 // Focal Length: 20.0mm // Exposure Time: 3 seconds // Aperture: f/11.0 // ISO: 400 // Exposure: Manual

Cool shot Pete although I would only know that was the QE2 by the title;).

Looks like it was a difficult shoot for framing like you mentioned. Nice idea about the ND grad, that has worked well .

Yeah that was a problem. I think it may have been better to be on the QE2 side with the fireworks behind, but it wouldn't have been the QE2 in Liverpool.

lol, think I took the picture at the exact same time (hope you don't mind me posting my pic). You can really see the differnce the ND grad on yours has made to the pic.

Aye. From shooting the Tate fireworks earlier in the year I knew that the skyline wouldn't come out due to the short exposure needed to capture the fireworks. ND FTW.

Hi Hawker

You could try using Photoshop top selectively 'up' the exposure on the QE2 and surrounding features... might work.
